Hon’ble Chief Minister of Telangana expresses his vision to bring the Olympics to Hyderabad in the future
Hyderabad, 9th July 2026: In a landmark push to transform Telangana into one of India’s leading sporting destinations, the Government of Telangana today unveiled the first look of the redeveloped Gachibowli Sports District—a world-class high-performance sports ecosystem that will redefine athlete training, sports education, innovation and international competition in the state. The occasion was also attended by IOA President and Olympian PT Usha.
The redevelopment of the iconic Gachibowli Stadium marks the beginning of a new era for Telangana sports, creating a globally benchmarked sporting hub designed to nurture champions while serving as a venue for elite national and international events.
Reaffirming the state’s commitment to celebrating sporting excellence, the Government also announced cash incentives worth ₹7.14 crore for international medal-winning athletes from Telangana. The recipients include World Para Athletics medallist Deepthi Jeevanji, Deaflympics champion Dhanush Srikanth, shooter Esha Singh, world champion boxer Nikhat Zareen, shooter K. Tanishq Muralidhar Naidu and shooter R. Surabhi Bharadwaj.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said:
“Telangana is building more than world-class sporting infrastructure—we are building a sporting culture. The Gachibowli Sports District represents our vision of creating opportunities for every talented youngster to dream big and compete with the best in the world. At the same time, by rewarding our international champions, we are recognising excellence and inspiring an entire generation to pursue sport with confidence and ambition. Our goal is to make Telangana the sporting capital of India and a destination for global sporting excellence and our vision is to bring the Olympics to Hyderabad in the future.”
The event also witnessed the launch of several transformative initiatives that will strengthen the state’s sports ecosystem. These included the unveiling of the logo of the Young Telangana Physical Education University (YIPESU), the launch of its official website, the Physical Literacy Mission in collaboration with the International Physical Literacy Association (IPLA), the Young India Sports Fellowship, and the introduction of academic programmes focused on sports education and leadership.
In a major boost for inclusive sports development, the Sports Authority of Telangana exchanged Memoranda of Understanding with the Aditya Mehta Foundation to implement a National Talent Identification Programme for Para-Athletes, and with MY Bharat, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, to expand grassroots sports participation among youth across Telangana.
Further cementing Telangana’s position as a national sporting powerhouse, the state announced that it will host the 8th Khelo India Youth Games 2026, expected to bring together around 7,500 athletes and officials across 26 disciplines, as well as the National Inter-District Junior Athletics Meet (NIDJAM) 2026, featuring more than 5,000 young athletes from over 650 districts across the country.
Adding to its growing sporting calendar, Telangana will also host marquee professional competitions including the Hockey India League, World Pickleball League, Archery Premier League and Tennis Premier League, attracting leading Indian and international athletes.
The Government also launched “Telangana Sports Knowledge on Wheels”, a statewide outreach initiative that will take expert coaching, sports science, nutrition, injury prevention and athlete education directly to districts, ensuring that quality sporting knowledge reaches aspiring athletes, coaches and physical education professionals across Telangana.
