1. The External Affairs Ministry extends help to countries affected in Africa with new ‘OMICRON’ variant; assure supply of Made-in-India vaccines with other essential commodities.

The World Health Organization began naming the variants after Greek letters to avoid public confusion and stigma.

3. Amid concerns over the Omicron COVID-19 variant, UP government has said that all international passengers arriving at its airports will have to undergo mandatory RT-PCR tests. Authorities in Agra, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Lucknow and Kanpur have been asked to monitor international arrivals closely. Other states, including Karnataka and Kerala, have also announced new guidelines for foreign arrivals.

4. Parag Agrawal, IITian replacing Jack Dorsey as Twitter CEO

An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B), Indian-American Parag Agrawal joined Twitter in 2011 as an Ads Engineer and was appointed as the CTO in 2017. Agrawal also holds a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University. Prior to joining Twitter, Agrawal held positions at Microsoft Research and Yahoo! Research.

1. The Caribbean island of Barbados on 29 Nov Monday prepared to wave goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II as head of state as it cuts ties with its colonial past and becomes a republic for the first time in history. As it severs imperial ties some 400 years after English ships first reached the Caribbean island.

2. At midnight, the Caribbean island Barbados became the world’s newest republic and removes the Queen as its head of state. The Prince of Wales has flown into Barbados for Monday’s handover ceremony in National Heroes Square as a representative of the Queen but also in his role as her successor as head of the Commonwealth – Barbados will remain in the Commonwealth.

3. Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday said that China would offer another 100 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines to African countries. The pledge of additional vaccine doses comes on top of the nearly 20 crore doses that China has already supplied to the continent.

4. The Swedish Parliament elected Magdalena Andersson, the first female Prime Minister of the country, a second time after she had resigned on her first day as her coalition partner withdrew its support. Andersson, who is Sweden’s former Finance Minister, was elected by a minority vote, garnering support from 101 legislators. She will govern as head of a single-party minority govt.

5. In Nigerian a gunmen attacked a prison and freed more than 260 inmates in Nigeria’s Jos city on 28 Nov. One guard and nine prisoners were killed in the gunbattle, No one immediately claimed responsibility for the raid in the capital of Plateau State, the country’s fourth such incident this year.

6. Afghanistan PM Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund has ordered to unblock frozen bank accounts of those who had worked under the Ashraf Ghani government and are still in the country. While the accounts will be unblocked, these officials won’t be paid their salaries, as per a report. Those from the previous regime now working for the present government will be remunerated.

7. Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold talks with Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Moscow on 30 Nov Tuesday.

8. Protestors in Lebanon blocked roads on 29 Nov by burning tyres in Beirut, Tripoli and Sidon to protest against looming economic turmoil in the country. The protests come as the value of the Lebanese pound sank to over 25,000 against the US dollar last week. The turmoil, which erupted in 2019, has pushed more than three-quarters of the population towards poverty.

9. COVID Omicron variant discovered in the UK, the PM Boris Johnson-led government declared that face masks will be made mandatory in the country. Violators to be penalised.
