Finland will send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. United Nations will hold emergency session of General Assembly today to discuss Russia’s military operations in Ukraine. UNGA President Abdulla Shahid will preside over the 11th Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly, at the UN Headquarters in New York.

2. The Sixth Operation Ganga flight from Budapest, Hungary has taken off. In a tweet, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that it is bringing back 240 Indian nationals to Delhi.

3. Weekend curfew has been lifted in Kyiv. Indian Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine has advised all students to make their way to the railway station for onward journey to the western parts. The embassy added that Ukraine Railways is putting special trains for evacuations.

4. The White House on Monday said that President Joe Biden will host the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for a special summit in the US from March 28-29.

5. UNGA calls for immediate ceasefire and full return to diplomacy and dialogue. As Moscow, Kyiv agree to another round of talks. India abstains from second UN vote on Ukraine.

🌎WORLD NEWS🌍

1. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday signed an application for Ukraine to join the European Union.

2. Europe and Canada have said, they would close their airspace to Russian airlines after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union would shut down its airspace for planes owned, registered or controlled by Russians, including the private jets.

3. Ukraine has said 352 of its civilians have been killed during Russia’s invasion, including 14 children. It says an additional 1,684 people, including 116 children, have been wounded.

4. *Finland will send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine*: amid ongoing Russian military offensive, PM Sanna Marin said on Monday. The shipment will include 2,500 assault rifles,1,50,000 bullets, 1,500 anti-tank weapons and 70,000 food packages, Defence Minister Antti Kaikkonen said. The decision comes as a policy shift for Finland which has remained militarily neutral since end of World War II.

5. *UN chief on Russia-Ukraine conflict*:
Speaking at the emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly over the Russia-Ukraine conflict on Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, “The mere idea of a nuclear conflict is simply inconceivable.” Notably, Guterres was speaking in reference to Russia putting its nuclear deterrent forces on high alert amid the conflict. Guterres also called it a “chilling development”

6. European Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis on Monday said that the European Union (EU) will hold a summit with China on April 1 in an attempt to defuse growing tensions between the two.

7. Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a ban on foreign exchange loans and transfers by its residents to outside of the country from March 1, in response to the economic sanctions imposed by the West. It also prohibits companies from buying back their own stocks. This comes after Russia banned flights from 36 countries in a retaliatory move against EU.
