INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. A Ladakh-based engineer Dorje Angchuk of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics has become the only Indian Honorary Member of the International Astronomical Union, along with ten others from around the world, joining a select list of 20 international experts.

2. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) is the foremost international association of professional astronomers and is over 100 years old. It has more than 13000 individual members and 82 national members, including India. The IAU is also the recognized authority for assigning names to stars, planets, asteroids, and so on. The IAU recently decided to award honorary membership to individuals who have strengthened the development of astronomy but who happen to not satisfy their criterion for regular membership.

3. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to visit Russia today (01 Sep) to participate in 6th EEF Summit in Vladivostok.

4. PM Modi spoke to President of the European Council Charles Michel on 31 Aug about the evolving situation in Afghanistan. PM Modi & Mr Michel also reiterated their commitment to further strengthening India-European Union relations.

5. India hosted the 8th Meeting of Agriculture Experts of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Countries virtually on 31 Aug. Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research chaired the daylong meeting. Ministry of Agriculture in a statement said that experts of Agricultural Ministries from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand participated in the meeting. During the meeting, Dr Mohapatra highlighted the UN Food System Summit 2021 and the transformations that are happening in the agriculture and food systems globally.

6. Ambassador of India to Qatar Deepak Mittal met Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, the Head of Taliban’s Political Office in Doha. The meeting took place at the Embassy of India in Doha on the request of the Taliban side on 31 Aug.

7. Ministry of External Affairs said, the discussions focused on safety, security and early return of Indian nationals stranded in Afghanistan. It said, the travel of Afghan nationals, especially minorities, who wish to visit India also came up. Ambassador Deepak Mittal raised India’s concern that Afghanistan’s soil should not be used for anti-Indian activities and terrorism in any manner. The Taliban Representative assured the Ambassador that these issues would be positively addressed.

8. The Indian and Algerian navies conducted their first ever naval exercise off the coast of Algeria on August 29, 2021. Stealth ship INS Tabar represented India while Algeria was represented by its naval ship ANS Ezager. The exercise reflects increased maritime cooperation among two countries.

9. The United Nations Security Council, under the Presidency of India, adopted a resolution on the situation in Afghanistan on August 30, 2021. The resolution demanded that the war-torn country, Afghanistan, not be used to threaten or attack any nation or shelter terrorists.

10. KAZIND-21: Wider scope in the 5th edition includes counter terrorism and insurgency ops
Started on August 30, 2021, the 5th edition of military exercise between India and Kazakhstan takes off at a Kazakh training node in Aisha Bibi. The focus of the 13 days (August 3—September 11) drill “KAZIND-21” is on counter-terror operations in mountainous terrain.

1. The United States announced the end of its 20-year-old war in Afghanistan before the deadline of August 31, 2021. This announcement was made after the last American military flight flew out of the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul before the August 31 deadline.

2. The 9/11 terrorist strike had forced the US to enter Afghanistan and overthrow the Taliban rule who had provided safe havens to the Al Qaeda leadership.
The Taliban rule was overthrown and replaced by US-backed Afghans. They then ruled the country for 20 years.

3. US-backed Afghan rule was overthrown by the Taliban again on August 15 when the president Ashraf Ghani fled the country and 3,00,000 Afghan armed forces troops, who were trained by United States, gave up without any fight.

4. The Islamic Emirate leadership council has held a three-day meeting in Kandahar province headed by the Taliban’s leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada, began on Saturday and ended on Monday, during which the leadership council discussed Afghanistan’s political, security and social issues. During the meeting, the council has also discussed issues around the formation of the new government and its cabinet and has taken some decisions on providing services to the people.
