1. Kerala long jumper Ancy Sojan smashed the 22-year-old national record which was in the name of legendary Anju Bobby George on the fourth day of Nationally Inter-State Championships in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.
The 25-year-old Ancy leaped a stunning 6.88m to better the previous national record of 6.83m which Anju created during the 2004 Athens Olympics.
2. Spain booked their place in the knockout stage with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Uruguay. In the Group G matches, Egypt reached the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time after a 1-1 draw with Iran, while Belgium defeated New Zealand 5-1 to finish at the top of the group.
3. In US Open Badminton, India’s Devika Sihag, Kidambi Srikanth and Rounak Chouhan have reached the semifinals at the Titan Gym in the California State University. Devika caused a major upset defeating third seed Riko Gunji of Japan in straight games, winning 22-20, 21-19 in the Women’s Singles Quarterfinals. In Men’s Singles, Srikanth defeated Chinese Taipei’s Liao Jhuo-Fu 21-9, 12-21, 21-8 to stay on course for a possible all-India final. Rounak Chouhan also advanced, beating Israel’s Misha Zilberman 23-21, 21-11.
4. India have reached the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Junior Mixed Team Championships with a convincing 2-0 victory over Kazakhstan in their opening Group C match in Yatsushiro, Japan. The girls’ doubles pair of Durga Esha Kandrapu and Keerthy Manchala gave India a strong start by defeating Alissa Kuleshova and Diana Namenova 11-5.
