The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has launched the first Trustworthy AI Framework for the Olympic Movement, providing practical guidance to help organisations and stakeholders across the Olympic Movement explore artificial intelligence responsibly, ethically and with confidence.
The Framework provides practical principles and tools that organisations can use when developing or using AI systems. Speaking about its purpose, Alejandro Merino-Madrid, the IOC’s Head of Artificial Intelligence, said: “AI has the potential to transform how athletes prepare, how sport is delivered, and how fans experience the Olympic Games. But technology must always serve sport — not the other way around. That means protecting athlete data, safeguarding fair competition and ensuring people understand how AI is being used. This Framework gives the Olympic Movement a common foundation to embrace those opportunities with confidence, while keeping athletes, integrity and our values at the centre.”
That focus on trust was central to the Framework’s development. Digital Transformation Consulting Partner Deloitte contributed specialist experience in AI, governance and strategy development, working with the IOC to turn complex questions around the responsible use of AI into a clear, actionable approach for sport.
Speaking about the collaboration, Mark Price, Vice-Chair and Global Lead Client Service Partner – International Olympic Committee, Deloitte, said: “Building trust in AI means embracing innovation while protecting fairness, integrity and the human values that are central to sport. Through our collaboration with the IOC, we have helped develop practical guidance that enables organisations across the Olympic Movement to capture AI opportunities, while navigating risks to make informed decisions and establish a strong foundation for the responsible adoption of AI.”
Who is the Framework designed for?
The Framework has been created for organisations and stakeholders across the Olympic Movement, from those beginning to explore AI to those already integrating it into their activities.
Bringing the athlete perspective to this work, Olympic medallist and IOC Member Sarah Walker said: “I followed a process every day because it gave me the best shot at the result I wanted. That process only worked because I trusted the people around me, and trust came from knowing what they were doing and why. As sport adopts AI, the athlete can’t get lost in that process. Athletes helped build this Framework, and it helps people make good choices about AI, ones that are open about how decisions get made and keep the athlete at the centre.”
Why does trustworthy AI matter in sport?
Artificial intelligence is transforming sport, creating opportunities across athlete support, Games operations, fan engagement and the day-to-day work of sports organisations.
At the same time, its increasing use raises important questions around fairness, athlete data, transparency, security and accountability. These challenges are particularly important in sport, where trust in competition, decision-making and the integrity of results is fundamental.
The Trustworthy AI Framework has been developed to help organisations embrace the opportunities presented by AI while identifying and understanding the associated risks.
What are the seven Trustworthy AI Principles?
The Framework is built around seven principles designed to provide a common foundation for trustworthy AI across the Olympic Movement:
Prioritise safe and secure AI for sport
Protect personal data with respect and care
Deliver robust and reliable AI for sport
Make sure the use of AI is clear and transparent
Govern AI with accountability and responsibility
Ensure AI is fair and equitable for all
Support sustainable AI for the future of sport.
Together, the principles can be applied throughout the lifecycle of an AI system, from initial design and procurement through to implementation and ongoing use.
How does the Trustworthy AI Checklist work?
To help turn the seven principles into action, the Framework is accompanied by a practical Trustworthy AI Checklist.
The three-step self-assessment tool helps organisations to:
Evaluate risk — Assess the inherent risks associated with an AI system before controls are applied.
Embed trust — Consider how the seven principles are addressed throughout the AI lifecycle.
Improve their approach — Receive practical recommendations, useful resources and suggestions on who can help make an AI system more trustworthy.
How was the Framework developed?
The Framework was developed by the IOC with the support of Digital Transformation Consulting Partner Deloitte and shaped through engagement with more than 200 leaders from across the Olympic Movement. This included input from athletes and experts across technology, governance and sport. Organisations across the Olympic Movement have also contributed practical perspectives on how the Framework can be applied.
Where does responsibility for AI use lie?
Responsibility for the trusted ethical development and use of AI remains with the organisations that design and/or deploy these systems, reflecting the different environments, technologies and regulatory requirements.
