“I Didn’t Want to Ride on Anyone Else’s Fame”, RJ Anmol on His Relationship with Amrita Rao, Fame and Finding His Own Identity

RJ Anmol, one of India’s best-known radio voices, has built a career spanning radio, entertainment, sports and entrepreneurship. From his early days in Delhi and Dubai to becoming a familiar voice through Purani Jeans, Anmol’s journey has been shaped by setbacks, self-belief and a conscious effort to define success on his own terms.

Speaking on the ThinkRight podcast with Rajan Navani and Sister BK Shivani, Anmol opened up about the personal experiences that shaped his outlook towards success, relationships, parenting and purpose.

One of his most candid revelations was about a difficult phase in his youth, when a 3.5-year relationship ended and he subsequently failed B.Com Honours. “I saw my mother cry. That woke me up,” he recalls. The setback pushed him towards fitness and academics, after which he scored 90%. “Since then, I don’t see anything as a challenge. If you expect potholes on a road, you enjoy the journey.”

That mindset also shaped his approach to his relationship with Amrita Rao. Anmol says he was determined to build an identity independent of his wife’s fame. “When I came to Mumbai, I wanted to create my own identity without riding on anyone else’s fame,” he says, crediting mutual self-respect and individual standing as important pillars of their relationship. He also reflects on how his definition of success has evolved – from wanting a car, money and a house at 25 to finding happiness without attaching it to external achievements. “I’m happy with a 1 BHK bungalow,” he says.

Parenthood, however, brought a new set of lessons. Speaking about raising their son Veer, Anmol says disagreements are inevitable, but a strong relationship is not about never fighting. “A perfect couple can have a difference of opinion without a difference of mind or heart.” He says he and Amrita learnt to navigate parenting differences by yielding rather than competing over who was right.

The values he wants Veer to grow up with are equally simple. When asked what he wants to become, Anmol teaches him to say: “I want to become a good person”, because there is very little competition there. He also starts his mornings with Veer through positive affirmations: “I am a positive soul, I am a peaceful soul.”

That philosophy now extends to Anmol’s work in sports through Grav8 Sports. He reveals that over the next year, he is working towards building an “Olympics for senior citizens” in India, where “kids and grandkids can cheer for their parents.” For Anmol, sport is ultimately about learning to win, lose, fall and get back up.

Across failure, fame, family and his work in sports, Anmol’s definition of success has shifted from achievement to significance. As he puts it: “When I lose, I celebrate; when I win, I celebrate. I just celebrate.”
