1. The nation paid homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 74th death anniversary yesterday (30 Jan). The day is also observed as Martyrs’ Day. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on this day in 1948. President Ram Nath Kovind laid a wreath at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in the national capital. PM Modi paid floral tributes.
2. India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage crosses 165.70 crore.
3. Over 75% of the eligible population in the country is now fully vaccinated. In a tweet, Union Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya said, with the mantra of Sabka Saath and Sabka Prayas, India has achieved the goal of vaccinating 75 % of its adult population with both doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
4. The Budget Session of Parliament will begin today. The session will commence with President Ram Nath Kovind’s address to both the Houses of Parliament assembled together at 11 AM in Central Hall.
5. PM Modi 85th Mann ki Baat highlights;-
(a) 60% of the youth in the age group of 15 to 18 years have got their vaccines within three to four weeks, PM Modi said.
(b) On poaching of rhinoceros, PM Modi appreciate the resolve of the people of Assam to save the rhinoceros.
(c) He also spoke about Virat horse who used to lead the Republic Day parade as Commandant Charger. “Horse Virat came to Rashtrapati Bhavan in 2003 and In this parade, th used to lead the parade every time on Republic Day as Commandant Charger. Even when a foreign head of state was welcomed in Rashtrapati Bhavan, Virat used to play this role.
(d) PM Modi also spoke about Shriman Amai Mahalinga Naik (also known as Tunnel Man) who is a farmer and was chosen for Padma Shri award this year
(e) Further PM Modi announced some of the Padma Award recipients of this year such as Basanti Devi of Uttarakhand, Lorembam Beino Devi of Manipur, and Amai Mahalinga Naik and said, “These are unsung heroes of our country, who have done extraordinary deeds in ordinary circumstances”.
(f) PM said a digital sculpture of Netaji has also been installed at India Gate and thanked people for welcoming this with enthusiasm. He added that in the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, India is re-establishing its national symbols through these efforts.
(g) He said that the Amar Jawan Jyoti near India Gate and the Jyoti lit at the National War Memorial in the vicinity, were merged. At the National War Memorial, the names of all bravehearts who have been martyred since Independence have been inscribed.
(h) PM Modi spoke on Martyr’s Day and remembered Mahatma Gandhi in his monthly radio programme. He also spoke about Republic Day. ” The display of the nation’s valour and strength, which we witnessed on Rajpath in Delhi filled everyone with pride and enthusiasm”.
6. PM Modi will address the 30th Foundation Day programme of National Commission for Women NCW today at 4:30 PM through video conferencing. The theme of the programme is ‘She The Change Maker’, aimed at celebrating the achievements of women in different fields.
7. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday arrived on a one-day visit to Goa ahead of the Assembly elections and offered prayers at Sai Baba Temple in Borim town.
8. Jammu and Kashmir: Police on Sunday informed that they have killed five terrorists including Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) commander Zahid Wani in dual encounters in the Kashmir valley in the last 12 hours.
9. MANIPUR : BJP on Sunday announced candidates for all 60 Assembly seats for the upcoming election in Manipur. Chief Minister N Biren Singh will seek re-election from the Heingang constituency.
10. KARNATAKA : An earthquake measuring 2.9 magnitude on richter scale was recorded in Vijayapura district on Sunday, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said.
11. GOA : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will visit poll-bound Goa on February 2 and address a public gathering in Sankhalim, state unit chief Girish Chodankar said.
12. PUNJAB: CM Charanjit Channi will contest from two seats in the state assembly elections – Bhadaur and Chamkaur Sahib. Congress on Sunday announced the CM’s candidature from the Bhadaur seat as it released its third list of eight candidates.
13. TELANGANA: State education minister, Sabitha Indra Reddy said that all educational institutions in the state will be reopened from 1 February. The minister also clarified that Covid guideline must be strictly ensured along with strict precautions.

18. India, Philippines ink $ 375 million deal for BrahMos missiles.
2. *Four major defence deals inked by India to modernise Armed Forces*
(i) *AK-203:*
India and Russia signed a contract to manufacture of nearly six lakh AK-203 assault rifles in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi this year. The project will be done in partnership with Russia, said the Centre, adding that it will help Uttar Pradesh become a defence manufacturing hub of India.
(ii) *Military technology cooperation:*
During President Putin’s much-awaited India visit, New Delhi and Moscow also signed signed an agreement for military technology cooperation for the next decade. They also signed the Protocol of the 20th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military & Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-M&MTC).
(iii) *Predator drones* :
In 2021, India had signed a deal with the US to procure 30 multi-mission armed Predator drones for USD 3 billion. The procurement proposal was moved by the Indian Navy and all three services are likely to get 10 drones each.
The remotely piloted drones, manufactured by US defence major General Atomics, are capable of remaining airborne for around 35 hours and can be deployed on a range of missions including surveillance, reconnaissance, intelligence gathering and destroying enemy targets.
(iv) *Next-generation drones, robotics:*
In November of 2021, India and Israel had signed an agreement to jointly develop next-generation technologies and products such as drones, robotics, artificial intelligence and quantum computing. The Bilateral Innovation Agreement (BIA) was firmed up between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel’s Directorate of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D).
