TN Governor R N Ravi ‘dismisses’ jailed minister Senthil Balaji; puts decision on hold within hours.
In an unprecedented move, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi on Thursday “dismissed” V Senthil Balaji from the cabinet citing his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a cash-for-jobs scam, but put the decision in “abeyance” within hours. Senthil Balaji, arrested June 14 by the Enforcement Directorate for an alleged job scam in 2015, is in judicial custody in a private hospital after having undergone a heart bypass surgery.

1. Tripura chief minister Manik Saha has ordered a magisterial enquiry after seven people, including three children and three women, were electrocuted to death during the ‘Ulto Rath’ (the return of Lord Jagannath’s chariot) procession in Unakoti district’s Kumarghat on Wednesday.

2. A portion of a ₹16 crore under-construction bridge collapsed because of heavy rains in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, a video of which surfaced online. In the video, locals can be seen standing near its edges as it collapsed.

3. The use of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) based face recognition software helped the Uttar Pradesh Police arrest 87 suspected cheats who appeared in the Village Development Officer recruitment exam conducted by UPSSSC.

4. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) banned six employees and six staffing firms in relation to the recruitment bribe case, TCS Chairman N Chandrasekaran said.

5. Punjab Police has filed a challan against over 20 supporters of Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh over the Ajnala incident, where Amritpal’s supporters barged into the Ajnala police station seeking Lovepreet Singh’s release. Lovepreet was arrested for illegally detaining and thrashing a Sikh youth.

6. The income tax department has unearthed a Rs 40 crore tax refund scam. Eight tax consultants, many employees of railways and police department and several technology companies in Hyderabad and Vijayawada are now under the scanner of the I-T investigation wing, Hyderabad.

7. Bishnupur SP Heisnam Balram Singh has said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s convoy was stopped at Bishnupur, fearing violence on the way to Churachandpur. Singh said that there was a possibility of a grenade attack along the highway that Rahul Gandhi was taking, because of which he was asked to travel to Churachandpur via helicopter.

8. An Uttar Pradesh police officer was sent to police lines after a video of his children showing off bundles of currency notes made rounds on the internet.
