MS Swaminathan Father of Green Revolution

M.S. Swaminathan – Known as the Father of India’s Green Revolution, renowned agricultural scientist Dr. M. S Swaminathan passed away at his residence in Chennai on Thursday. Swaminathan was chiefly responsible for bringing in the social and agricultural revolution in India during the 1960s when the country was struggling with a famine-like situation. By injecting strategic policies, and developing high-yielding seeds suited to the Indian climate, he ensured a wave of change at the grassroots level in the Indian agricultural space.

The Padma awardee took great efforts in recognising the role of women in the Indian agricultural sector, and rolled out several initiatives, including the Mahila Sashaktikaran Yojana, to empower women in the country.

1. PITRU PAKSH 2023 starts today : It is the ‘fortnight of the ancestors’, a tradition observed by the Hindus to pay homage to their ‘pitrs’ or ancestors. It extends for a period of 16 days during Krishna paksha ie., between Purnima (full moon day) and amavasya, during the month of Ashvin or Bhadrapada (pitra moksha amavasya) which falls on October 14, 2023 Saturday.

2. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will visit Bihar on Friday. During his day-long itinerary, Mr. Dhankhar will interact with students and faculty members of the Nalanda University in Rajgir.

3. PM Modi paid his tributes to the freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary yesterday.

4. Anant Chaturdashi, marking culmination of ten-day long Ganesh Utsav, being celebrated in different parts of the country.

5. PM Modi will launch a week-long programme for Aspirational Blocks in the country called Sankalp Saptaah in New Delhi on Saturday.

6. The inaugural programme will witness the participation of about three thousand panchayat and block-level people’s representatives and functionaries from across the country in Bharat Mandapam.

7. Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav, a 75 day-long event to celebrate the Indian languages started yesterday in Lucknow. Padma shree awardees and representatives of different Indian languages are taking part in the program which includes Bahubhashi Sangoshthi i.e. Multi-laguage conference and play based on Ramayan.

The festival will continue till 11 December, which is birthday of Famous Tamil poet Subrahmanyam Bharti and celebrated as Indian Languages day.

8. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has said that a policy is being framed to make all the national highway potholes free by December 2023.

11. The KARNATAKA government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges based in Bengaluru and Mandya districts on September 29, in view of the bandh called by pro-Kannada groups and farmers’ organisations to protest against the release of Cauvery river water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

15. The Kerala Cabinet decided to petition the Supreme Court against the “inordinate delay” on the part of Governor Arif Mohammed Khan in giving gubernatorial assent to several laws passed by the State Assembly over the past one-and-a-half years.

1. Chairman of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) Sanjay Kumar Agarwal on Thursday said that tackling the issue of illicit trade is necessary for safeguarding India’s economic stability, ensuring fair competition, and fostering a conducive environment for sustainable growth.

1. Indian Army celebrates 197th Gunners Day. Chief of the Army Staff Gen Manoj Pande conveyed greetings and best wishes to all ranks, veterans, and families of the regiment of ARTILLERY on the occasion.

2. To promote indigenously designed and developed weapon systems, the Indian Army has moved a proposal to the Defence Ministry to buy 400 howitzers from Indian firms. Indian Army’s Regiment of Artillery is looking to use the expertise of Indian Industry to produce 155 mm/52 calibre Towed Gun System.

3. A two-day seminar on the Indian Navy’s Vision- 2047 was held at Visakhapatnam by the Maritime Warfare Centre under the aegis of Eastern Naval Command.

4. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has recently celebrated the arrival of the first of six state-of-the-art Dornier Do-228 aircraft, exclusively manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The Ministry of Defence inked a deal with HAL for the procurement of six Dornier-228 aircraft, allocating a budget of Rs 667 crore in March.

The Director General of Police in Jammu and Kashmir, Dilbag Singh, has stated that the security forces in the region are alert and active in order to counter the actions of Pakistan-backed anti-national elements. Singh emphasized that the people of Jammu and Kashmir desire peace and have recognized the harmful intentions of Pakistan.
