1. Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has said that India’s maritime sector is a strong anchor for national progress. In a social media post on World Maritime Day yesterday, Mr Sonowal said, the government is focused on infra modernisation, policy reforms and a resolute Seafarer First vision, which is driving this growth forward.

6. Punjab has notified an 8 percentage-point DA increase for state government employees and pensioners from 1 September 2026, raising the DA rate from 42% to 50%.
7. Bharat Taxi was launched in Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Kanpur and Prayagraj on 23rd of September 2026. This cooperative ride-hailing service works on the principle of “Driver is the Owner”.
8. Lonely Planet has chosen Gujarat and Darjeeling Himalayan Railways as two Indian items that have made it to the list of Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2027: 25 destinations and 25 travel experiences. The list consists of 50 recommended items: half of which are destinations and the other half are travel experiences. While Lonely Planet describes Gujarat because of its salt flats, wildlife and heritage, Darjeeling Himalayan Railways, known popularly as the Toy Train, has been chosen because of its special mountain journey.
9. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced that the foundation stone of ISRO’s Advanced Radar Research Centre would be laid at Chandrapur. ISRO chairperson V Narayanan was present at the ceremony. The centre is part of Project NETRA (Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis), which strengthens India’s ability to track satellites and debris in orbit.
10. Pi Mari-i, who was a teacher and now a farmer, hails from Mizoram and has been chosen among the FAO 100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems and Rural Development. This is part of the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026, which was designated by the United Nations to celebrate the contributions made by women in agrifood systems.
11. Telangana has set a target of 5 GW hyperscale data centre capacity by 2029. The state has linked this target with an estimated $30 billion in potential investment across artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.
12. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana 2.0 is a rural skilling programme of the Government of India that was upgraded through notified guidelines in May 2025. The scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development and focuses on training, placement, post-placement support, and employment sustainability for rural youth.
13. Tamilnadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay conducted a surprise inspection at the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) headquarters, located in Chennai, to review the various aspects of power generation, distribution, and grid management, on Wednesday (September 23, 2026).
14. The Assam Cabinet on Thursday (September 24, 2026) approved a rule that makes registration of Muslim marriages compulsory in the State.
15. Maruti Suzuki India Limited commissioned its first Green Hydrogen (GH₂) electrolyser plant at its Manesar facility in Haryana on 24 September 2026. The plant has a capacity of 300 kW and functions as a pilot project for green hydrogen production and use in manufacturing operations.

1. ‘Anti-Goonda’ Bill fails to get President’s nod over overlap with Central legislation
President returns Bill for reconsideration after Centre raises conflict with NDPS Act, 1985.
In its note before returning the Bill, the Central government said, “Section (B) of the proposed Bill, insofar as it includes within the definition of ‘goonda’ a person who commits, attempts to commit, abets, promotes, finances or facilitates any offence punishable under the NDPS Act, 1985, may overlap with the preventive-detention framework provided under the PITNDPS Act, 1988.
2. The Delhi High Court denies anticipatory bail to YouTuber Ajeet Bharti in a case registered under the SC-ST Act over alleged objectionable remarks made during a YouTube broadcast concerning Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad.
3. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed the CBI’s challenge to the bail granted to former NSE managing director and CEO Chitra Ramkrishna in a case related to alleged illegal phone tapping of NSE employees.
4. Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, seek fresh roll revision. They demanded that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls be withdrawn, followed by a fresh revision.
5. Bollywood actor Rakesh Bedi moved the Delhi High Court on Wednesday seeking protection of his personality rights.

*DEFENCE News*

1. The Defence Ministry has signed a contract of over 810 crore rupees with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) along with associated equipment for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The contract was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi today. The delivery of SAT-SAAW is scheduled between 2027-2028 and 2028-2029.
2. INS Trishul (F43), a guided missile frigate of the Indian Navy, arrived at the Toulon naval base in France on 22 September 2026 for the 24th edition of the India-France bilateral maritime exercise Varuna. The exercise series began in 1983 and received the name “Varuna” in 2001.
3. SLINEX-26 concludes
The India–Sri Lanka bilateral maritime exercise SLINEX-26 concluded at Visakhapatnam on 23 September. The exercise focused on strengthening maritime cooperation between the two navies.
4. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said India has articulated a new policy on terrorism following Operation Sindoor, stressing that a terrorist attack originating from Pakistani territory would be treated as an act of war.
5. The Department of Defence Production reports that India’s defence production reached an all-time high of ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025–26, while defence exports reached ₹38,424 crore.

1. The Government sources emphasised that Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on person-to-merchant UPI transactions above two thousand rupees is not a Cess or Surcharge. Sources said not a single rupee of MDR goes to the Government.
2. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) increased its forecast of economic growth for India to 7% for FY2026-27 from the 6.6% forecasted in July 2026. The increase was due to better than expected economic performance during the first quarter of FY2026-27 where GDP grew by 7.8% on an annual basis.

2. Veteran actor Mushtaq Khan died at the age of 56 on 24 September 2026 in Mumbai. He died at Nanavati Hospital after about 15 days of hospitalisation.
Khan worked in Hindi films and television and appeared in films such as Welcome, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Aashiqui, Hera Pheri, Jodi No. 1, Gadar 2, Badhaai Do, and Stree 2.
