2. In Odisha, the sacred ‘Adapa Bije’ ritual of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra is being solemnly observed yesterday evening at the Sri Gundicha Temple in Puri, marking one of the most spiritually significant ceremonies of the annual Rath Yatra.

3. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis laid the foundation stone for three major National Highway projects in Pune.

4. The Maharashtra government has approved the Agri-Hackathon as a permanent state-wide scheme. The initiative aims to encourage the development of practical, technology-driven solutions to address the unique agricultural challenges faced across the state’s nine agro-climatic zones.

5. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has sought the Centre’s support on key issues related to aquaculture, tobacco farmers and the proposed Rayalaseema Integrated Horticulture Development Plan.

Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) has formally proposed establishing a new greenfield shipyard in Andhra Pradesh, with Machilipatnam in Krishna district and Dugarajapatnam in Tirupati district identified as potential sites.This initiative is part of India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and aims to expand domestic shipbuilding capacity while positioning Andhra Pradesh as a major maritime hub.

7. Harjit Singh Grewal was appointed Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) on 16 July 2026. The Ministry of Minority Affairs issued the notification for the appointment on the same date. The post had remained vacant since April 2025 after the completion of Iqbal Singh Lalpura’s tenure.

8. India commissioned its first and deepest geothermal wells in the Puga Valley of Ladakh on 17 July 2026. Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh V.K. Saxena inaugurated two wells drilled to a depth of 1,000 metres each at an altitude of more than 14,000 feet.

9. The Women’s Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill will be passed in the Monsoon session of Parliament, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale said.

10. Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University and Virginia Tech University will collaborate on research to tackle rising fruit fly infestations and other crop pests. The study will focus on integrated pest management across 25 vegetable villages near Hyderabad.

11. TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee challenged rebel MPs and MLAs to return to Mamata Banerjee, saying he would resign within an hour if they did, rejecting claims that he was the reason behind the rebellion.

12. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red-colour warning for very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Uttarakhand. Heavy rainfall is also expected over Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Mahe, Odisha and parts of Northeast India during the next two days.

1. The Bar Council of India (BCI) issued a circular on 17 July 2026 on social media conduct for advocates, law students, and interns. The circular applies to State Bar Councils and Centres of Legal Education and concerns digital ethics, court decorum, confidentiality, and professional conduct.

2. The Gujarat Anti‑Terrorist Squad has arrested five more individuals in connection with its ongoing investigation into a terror module linked to the Pakistan‑based banned organisation Jaish‑e‑Mohammed.

3. The Ministry of Education has said that it has taken immediate action after a TV investigation reported serious irregularities in three B.Ed. colleges affiliated with Barkatullah University, Madhya Pradesh. The report alleged that some colleges were not functioning at their declared locations and lacked the required infrastructure.

4. Police in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district have seized a large quantity of illegal cannabis. Mangawan police seized approximately 2,030 kilograms of cannabis hidden inside maize sacks. Two interstate smugglers were arrested in this action. Police also seized property worth around four crore twenty five lakh rupees.

1. In Gujarat, five people were killed and several others injured yesterday after a massive fire broke out at a firecracker manufacturing and processing unit on the Ramol-Gatrad Road in Ahmedabad.

2. In Andhra Pradesh, five fishermen lost their lives after drowning in the Godavari River near Gollagudem village of Polavaram district yesterday. The victims had gone to the river for fishing when they were reportedly swept away by the strong current.

1. Hyderabad-based Lokesh Machines has secured a ₹58.21 crore ($6 million) contract from the Indian Army to supply modification kits for FN MAG 7.62×51mm medium machine guns, marking a major expansion of its role in India’s defence manufacturing program.

2. India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has reaffirmed that zero tolerance against terrorism is not just rhetoric but a concrete line of action, citing Operation Sindoor as proof of India’s resolve.He also highlighted record defence production of ₹1.78 lakh crore and exports to nearly 100 countries, positioning India as a credible global security partner.

3. The Northern Railway has officially renamed Kathua Railway Station in the Jammu Division as “Martyr Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary Kathua” Railway Station with immediate effect.

4. Kaveri 2.0 represents India’s most ambitious push for defence self‑reliance, aiming to replace imported GE F404 engines with an indigenous powerplant for TEJAS MK-1A, AMCA, and stealth drones.

5. The Indian Navy is set to strengthen its anti-submarine warfare capabilities with the induction of three more MH-60R Seahawk helicopters.These specialised submarine-hunting platforms are being delivered by US defence giant Lockheed Martin, with one already handed over last week and two more expected this week.

6. The Indian Air Force has issued a tender for the upkeep of the technical zone at Air Force Station Sulur. At first glance this may appear to be routine facility maintenance, but in reality it represents a significant investment in one of India’s most critical aviation centres.

7. Paninian India Private Limited has unveiled the indigenous Yantur TJ1.6 turbojet engine, marking a significant step forward in India’s private aerospace propulsion sector. The engine has been designed with modular architecture, enabling easier maintenance, scalability, and adaptability for different aerial platforms.

1. The Odyssey was released in theaters worldwide on 17 July 2026. The film premiered in IMAX, IMAX 70mm, and other premium formats.

The movie is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, along with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o.

2. JANA NAYAGAN is not just releasing. It is releasing as a different film from the one that was originally submitted to the CBFC at the end of last year.

Producer K Venkata Narayana of KVN Productions has confirmed that the version of Jana Nayagan audiences will see in theatres on July 23 has undergone significant changes since the certification battle began in January, including the addition of new songs, multiple modifications to existing footage, and a title card change that credits Vijay not as an actor but as the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

3. The 72nd National Film Awards, which honoured films that received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) during the 2024 calendar year, were announced. The 72nd National Film Awards aims to recognise excellence in feature films, non-feature films and writing on cinema across Indian languages.

Amaran, one of the biggest hits of 2024, bagged multiple awards at the 72nd National Film Awards.

The evening saw actor-director Dhanush’s film Raayanwin the Best Tamil Film award. Produced by Sun Pictures and directed by Dhanush.
