1. The ‘Surya tilak’ of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya was done for around 4-5 minutes at noon on Wednesday on the occasion of Ram Navami using an elaborate mechanism involving mirrors and lenses by which sunbeams were directed on the forehead of the Ram idol. This is the first Ram Navami since the consecration of the Ram idol at the new temple, inaugurated by PM Modi on 22 Jan 2024.

2. Election Commission has advised the West Bengal governor to call off his proposed tour of Cooch Behar on the eve of the Lok Sabha polls’ first phase as it was violative of the Model Code of Conduct. Polling is scheduled in Cooch Behar on April 19.

6. Flight services from the international airport in Thiruvananthapuram will be suspended for five hours on April 21 for the smooth continuation of the holy ‘Painkuni Arattu’ procession of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple across the runway.

7. Trinamool Congress on Wednesday released its Lok Sabha poll manifesto promising several social welfare measures and repeal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) if the opposition Indian Natinoal Developmental (INDIA) bloc comes to power at the Centre.

8. Annamalai-led BJP in Tamil Nadu is set to emerge as the second biggest party in terms of the vote share after the DMK. As per the Times Now-ETG_Research Survey, the saffron party is predicted to secure a 19 per cent vote share in the general elections in Tamil Nadu.

9. Telugu Desam president Nara Chandrababu Naidu has called upon the people to support the TD-JS-BJP alliance in the present elections to provide Andhra Pradesh with good governance and welfare.

10. Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday launched its “AAP Ka RamRajya” website to showcase the party’s concept of “Ram Rajya”, saying Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tried to realise the ideals of Lord Ram in the national capital.

1. An Academic-activist Shoma Kanti Sen was released from Byculla jail in Mumbai at 1.30 pm on Wednesday. She was arrested in June 2018 in connection with the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case. The Supreme Court granted her bail on 5 April 2024.

2. A Gram Panchayat Chairman and BJP leader Sangam Wangsu, in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district was kidnapped by suspected militants on Wednesday, two days ahead of the simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state on April 19.

3. Just two days ahead of the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday expelled one of its leaders in Manipur, E Dwijamani Singh, from the party for six years. Singh, an ex-MLA of the Congress, joined the saffron camp in 2022 after being denied a ticket by the grand old party. Immediately after his expulsion from the BJP, Singh returned to the Congress.

4. A migrant worker from Bihar was shot dead by terrorists in south Kashmir’s Anantnag on Wednesday. The man was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

5. A woman cannot be held accountable for abetting the suicide of a man if he ends his life due to “love failure”, the Delhi High Court has observed while granting pre-arrest bail to two persons in an abetment of suicide case. The court said another person cannot be blamed for the wrong decision taken by a man of a “weak and frail mentality”.

6. Indian Coast Guard has apprehended an Indian fishing boat with “unauthorised cash” off Maharashtra coast, the defence ministry said on Wednesday.

The operation revealed a “carriage of Rs 11.46 lakh which was meant to be given to some Indian OSV (Offshore Supply Vessel) operating from offshore areas in return of smuggled diesel.

Rescuers searched the Jhelum waters on Wednesday for three people who went missing after a boat capsized in the river the day before, claiming six lives. Six people were pulled out of the Jhelum river, which has swollen over the last couple of days due to incessant rains in the Kashmir valley.

Officials said 19 people were on board, out of which six drowned and 10 were rescued. The boat, which was carrying mostly schoolchildren, capsized in the Gandbal Nowgam area in Srinagar on Tuesday.

1. INDIA-UZBEKISTAN DEFENCE COLLABORATION: The Chief of the Army Staff, General Manoj Pande, recently inaugurated a high-tech IT Laboratory at the Uzbek Academy of Armed Forces during his visit to Uzbekistan from April 15-18.

2. Army to hold 96 Agniveer Recruitment Rallies; Special Focus on Inducting Women. The Army has scheduled an online combined entrance examination that will span 174 locations nationwide. The examination window, set from April 22 to May 7, is expected to witness participation from an unprecedented 12 lakh 80 thousand registered candidates.

3. The Maharashtra government on Wednesday informed the Bombay high court that it has decided to grant financial benefits to the family of an Army Major, who was killed in the line of duty in Jammu and Kashmir four years ago. Aakriti Sood, the widow of Major Anuj Sood, had moved the high court seeking benefits (monetary) for ex-servicemen under two government resolutions of 2019 and 2020.

Major Sood lost his life on May 2, 2020, when he was rescuing civilian hostages from terrorist hideouts. He was awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.

4. India is planning to carry out the first test of the 120–130 km strike range Astra MK-2 air-to-air missile in next few months.The Astra MK-1 air-to-air missile with strike range of around 90–100 kms is already in the Indian Air Force.

5. Argentina inked a deal for 24 F-16 jets for its air force from Denmark for some $300 millions.

6. Squadron Leader Dalip Singh Majithia, the oldest living pilot of the Indian Air Force, passed away at the age of 103 on Monday night at his farm in Uttarakhand.

Born on July 27, 1920, in Shimla, Majithia followed in the footsteps of his uncle, Surjeet Singh Majithia, and joined the Indian Air Force (IAF) volunteer reserve in 1940 during World War II.

Majithia retired from the Indian Air Force on March 18, 1947, and settled down at his family’s estate in Sardarnagar, near Gorakhpur, in Uttar Pradesh. However, his love for aviation did not wane. In 1949, he made history by conducting the first landing of an aircraft in Kathmandu, Nepal, on an unprepared piece of land, which is now the site of the country’s international airport.
