1. President Smt. Droupadi Murmu approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Uttarakhand Bill, 2024. With the implementation of this Bill, Uttarakhand will become the first State in the country to implement the UCC after Independence.

2. PM Modi launched the ‘Pradhan Mantri Samajik Utthan Evam Rozgar Adharit Jankalyan’ (PM-SURAJ) national portal on Wednesday and sanctioned credit assistance for one lakh entrepreneurs from disadvantaged communities. He also interacted with beneficiaries of various government schemes from disadvantaged groups, including Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes and sanitation workers through video conferencing.

3. MoRD (Ministry of Rural Development) and IIT Delhi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on geospatial technology and artificial intelligence (AI) for rural development. The partnership aims to leverage technology to enhance the effectiveness and transparency of rural development initiatives.

4. PM Modi will address PM SVANidhi Beneficiaries on Thursday at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi. During the programme, Prime Minister Modi will distribute loans under the scheme to 1 lakh street vendors, including 5,000 vendors from Delhi. Mr Modi will also lay the foundation stone of two additional corridors of Delhi Metro’s Phase 4.

5. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved two new corridors of Delhi Metro’s Phase-IV project – Lajpat Nagar to Saket G-Block and Inderlok to Indraprastha – Union Minister Anurag Thakur said.

6. The Heavy Industries Ministry announced the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024 to accelerate the adoption of Electronic Vehicles (EVs) in India. The Ministry said that a total outlay of 500 crore rupees will be implemented for four months under the scheme. It will run from 1st of the next month until July.

7. The BJP released the second list of its 72 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on Wednesday. Union Ministers Anurag Singh Thakur will contest from Hamirpur Parliamentary Constituency in Himachal Pradesh while Nitin Gadkari will fight from Nagpur seat, Piyush Goyal from Mumbai North and Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar from Dindori seat in Maharashtra.

8. Union Home Minister Chas said that the Government has decided to celebrate the 17th of September every year as Hyderabad Liberation Day in honour of the martyrs of the Hyderabad Liberation Movement. He said, the decision is a befitting tribute to the freedom fighters and the martyrs who made supreme sacrifices to remain a part of Bharat by liberating the Hyderabad region from the atrocious Nizam rule.

9. Secretary Ministry of AYUSH Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha inaugurated the Yoga Mahotsav 2024 on Wednesday, celebrating the 100-day countdown to this year’s International Day of Yoga in New Delhi.

10. Shimla-born Preneet Kaur, the veteran Congress MP from the Patiala Lok Sabha segment and former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s wife, will join the BJP Thursday, drawing curtains on a decades-long Congress career.

11. The Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government in Haryana won the trust vote by a voice vote during a special session of the Vidhan Sabha here today. Saini had taken oath as the Chief Minister On 12 March.

12. The Maharashtra government on Wednesday gave the Sandeep Shinde committee, set up last year to scrutinise Kunbi records of the Maratha community, an extension till April 30. The committee was set up on 7 September 2023.

13. BJD to take call on tie-up with BJP today: With the possibility of a pre-poll alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Biju Janata Dal still lingering, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has convened a meeting of his party’s senior leaders on Thursday afternoon.

14. The high-level committee on simultaneous polls headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind is likely to submit its report on ‘one nation, one election’ today(Thursday).

1. The Maharashtra State Bank Employees Federation has demanded the resignation of State Bank of India (SBI) Chairman Dinesh Khera. The demand comes after Khera made a submission in the Supreme Court requesting more time until June 2024 to provide information on electoral bonds, citing the time-consuming nature of the process.

2. The Ministry of Home Affairs declared the Jammu Kashmir National Front (JKNF) as an ‘unlawful association’ with immediate effect under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for five years. The outfit is run by Nayeem Ahmad Khan.

3. Two “important” people of the United National Liberation Front (P) have been arrested in a joint operation conducted by the Manipur Police, NIA and CRPF.

Thokchom Thoiba, a self-styled army chief of the proscribed outfit, and Laimayum Ingba, the head of the INT department of the UNLF(P), were arrested in the operation.

4. The Centre on Tuesday defended before the Delhi high court its decision to dissolve Maulana Azad Education Foundation (MAEF), saying its continued operation was “obsolete” when there is a dedicated ministry for the benefit of minorities.

1. The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has secured $24.5 million from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for its inaugural anchored project, the Avaana Sustainability Fund (ASF), valued at $120 million. 1. The Ministry of Defence has signed two contracts worth 8,073 crore rupees with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the acquisition of 34 Advanced Light Helicopters on Wednesday. The Ministry in a statement said that the deal was sealed for procuring 25 Advanced Light Helicopters utility for the Indian Army and 9 Advanced Light Helicopters for maritime role for the Indian Coast Guard under the buy Indian-indigenously designed, developed and manufactured category.

2. India has slashed its procurement of defence equipment from Russia to less than half, marking the first such reduction since the 1960s. This strategic shift aims to reduce reliance on Russian arms amidst tensions with Pakistan and China.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India’s arms imports from Russia have plummeted from 76% in the 2009–13 period to just 36% in 2019–23, indicating a substantial change in defence procurement strategy.

3. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has taken a significant step in enhancing its operational capabilities with the signing of a contract for the acquisition of nine Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) MK-III, along with Operational Role Equipment, Engineering Support Package (ESP), and Performance Based Logistics (PBL) from HAL Bangalore. The contract, valued at ₹4079.78 Cr.

4. The Indian Navy has submitted a significant proposal to the Defence Ministry for the construction of its second aircraft carrier. The Cochin Shipyard Limited is slated to undertake this project. This initiative, seen as one of the flagship programs under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Atmanirbharta” (self-reliance) campaign in the defence sector.

The first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, was commissioned by Prime Minister Modi in Kochi in September 2022.

5. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd reached yet another significant milestone by simultaneously launching two ASWSWC warships for the Indian Navy on Wednesday, 13 March 2024.

The ships were launched by Mrs Neeta Chaudhari, President Air Force Families Welfare Association (IFFWA) & wife of Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari, Chief of the Air Staff, Indian Air Force. Named them “INS Agray” and “INS Akshay”.

6. The Indian Navy recently took part in a major maritime exercise called EXERCISE CUTLASS EXPRESS – 24 (CE-24). This exercise was held in Port Victoria, Seychelles from 26 February to 08 March 2024. The Indian Navy was represented by the ship INS Tir, The exercise was inaugurated by the President of Seychelles, Wavel Ramkalawan, in the presence of dignitaries from India, USA, and African countries.

7. The Government of India has launched its ambitious Deep Ocean Mission (DOM) through the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) with an intention to develop technologies to harness the living and non-living resources from the deep-oceans.

Samudrayaan is aimed at developing a self-propelled manned submersible to carry three human beings to a water depth of 6,000m in the ocean with a suite of scientific sensors and tools for deep ocean exploration. It has an endurance of 12 hours of operational period and 96 hours in case of emergency.

8. The 10th India-Italy Joint Defence Committee meeting was held in New Delhi on Wednesday. During the meeting, both sides discussed a wide range of defence industrial and military cooperation issues. They also exchanged views on the Indo-Pacific and the security situations. Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and Italian Secretary General of Defence and National Armament Director Lt Gen Luciano Portolano co-chaired the meeting.

9. Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh has approved a proposal for the expansion of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) with the addition of three lakh cadet vacancies. According to a release, this expansion is expected to cater to the increasing demand for the NCC from educational institutions throughout the country. The expansion plan encompasses the establishment of four new Group Headquarters and the addition of two new NCC units.

10. The Indian Coast Guard has filed an affidavit in response to a plea moved by a woman officer seeking permanent commission. Observing that women cannot be left out, a bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud recently asked the Centre to ensure they are granted permanent commission in the Coast Guard.

11. The Union Home Ministry has decided to extend financial support of 50 per cent on Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the purchase of goods from Kendriya Police Kalyan Bhandar as a welfare measure. This decision will be effective from the 1st of April, 2024. It aims at benefiting serving and retired personnel of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Central Police Organisations and State Police Forces and their families.
