Cyclone Tauktae

Cyclone Tauktae – Indian Army is actively helping. They deployed 180 teams as it hit the coast of Gujrat. The Army is trained and well equipped to come to the Aid of Civil authorities whenever requisitioned. The District Magistrate is empowered to sign a warrant of request to the Station Commander of the nearest Cantonment.
Communications – The Dept. of Telecom (DoT) has allowed intra-circle roaming in cyclone hit districts of Gujarat.

PM Modi on 18th May attended a high level meeting to get first hand information on handling of the Cyclone from State and District Officials.

Plasma Therapy Controversy – Earlier the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had dropped the use of Plasma therapy from the protocol of treating COVID-19 patients. However Indian Medical Association (IMA) yesterday gave its support to Plasma Therapy in moderate cases of infection and its use may reduce Oxygen requirement.

Goa – Electricity is likely to be restored by today after the Cyclone damage.
Maharashtra CM wants to be self-sufficient in production of Oxygen and plans for a capacity of 3,000 Metric Tons of Oxygen production per day locally.

Delhi CM announced ex-gratia compensation of Rs 50,000 to every family that has had a death due to COVID-19 virus.

Live-in-Relationship is not approved by the Punjab & Haryana High Court, while dismissing a plea of a couple for protection from their family. The court ruled that in the garb of seeking protection the applicant girl is seeking tacit approval of their Live-In relationship. This is contrary to the Supreme Court stand – Living together is not an offence. It cannot be an offence, a special three-Judge Bench of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) K.G. Balakrishnan and Justices Deepak Verma and B.S. Chauhan of The Supreme Court said there was no law which prohibits live-in relationship or premarital sex.

Haryana Cremation Hero Praveen Kumar died of COVID-19 infection. He had cremated over 300 COVID-19 patient bodies since last year. He was also the President of the Municipal Corporation Safai Karmchari Union.

Kerala CM has decided to drop all ministers of the previous government while forming the new cabinet. Most shocking is the dropping of Ms. Shailaja, the previous Health Minister who did great work in fighting COVID-19 virus, also won with the highest vote margin. However she was graceful in accepting by saying new faces should be given a chance.

Tamil Nadu will open up COVID vaccination for 18 to 44 age group.

Odisha has extended the COVID Lockdown till 1st June.

Bengal had announced a 15 day lockdown beginning Sunday 16th May. Air Asia India has announced free cancellation of air tickets.

Delhi CM has urged the Central Government to suspend all air travel to Singapore, as they have a new strain of COVID-19 virus which affects children.

The Indian Women’s Cricket Team was given a chartered flight to Mumbai by BCCI where they shall be in quarantine for 15 days before flying out for the UK tour. Skipper Mithali Raj thanked the BCCI.

Sushil Kumar the Olympic Medalist Wrestler continues to be in trouble. The Delhi Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. Allegedly the wrestler 23 Year Old Sagar Rana, who died in the brawl was living in his house near the Chhatrasal Stadium. Sushil Kumar was living inside the Stadium.

Joseph James – An Asian Games Gold medalist in 2006 and with a Gold at the Asian Powerlifting Championship in 2008 is sick. He developed serious breathing issues on 24th of April after contracting COVID-19. He is admitted in Vivekananda Hospital in Hyderabad. The Sports Ministry has approved an assistance of Rs 2.5 Lacs.
