Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that progresses gradually and the symptoms are seen after a period of time. The motor skills of one are impacted as the central nervous system is compromised if one has this disease. The symptoms of it are shaking, rigidity, and difficulty walking, and moving. This disease takes a toll on the dopamine-producing neurons, and is linked to depression, anxiety, and nervousness, and interferes with one’s daily routine. Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road has launched a support group to educate and motivate patients and caregivers. The event conducted by the hospital aimed to ensure that the patients and caregivers are educated regarding the importance of motor coordination and managing the disease further.

Dr Pavan Pai, Consultant Interventional Neurologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, said “Parkinson’s disease (PD) is known to cause higher mortality and morbidity rates in the country. Though it cannot be cured it is possible to manage it with prompt guidance from the doctor. The patient will also need the help of family members and caregivers. Overall well-being, exercise, and nutrition of the patient should be compromised at all. Just like the patient, his/her family also goes through a lot of stress. Thus, it is imperative to have a thorough knowledge of the disease. The patients encounter limb, hand, and finger problems. The muscles become rigid, and there are gait impairments, poor posture, speech and writing problems, and an inability to control movements. It becomes challenging to manage patients who are unable to move or balance themselves.”

Dr Sheetal Goyal, Consultant Neurologist Wockhardt Hospital added, “Our support group sends a message that we are there to take care of the patients. We did Physiotherapy activity with fun drawing competitions to improve balance, stamina, endurance, flexibility, and hand-eye-coordination and reduce stress and stiffness of the muscles. Drawing can make one happy and perk up the mood. One will also be able to improve gait, balance, grip strength, and motor coordination and reduce tremors. The recent advancement in the management of Parkinson’s disease will also help in helping patients to improve their health. So, do not panic and stay in touch with the doctor to monitor your health.”

One of the patients, Mr Jagdish said, “This helps us in awareness and our daily routine. Due to Parkinson my hands are continuously shaking and I am not able to write or hold perfectly.
