1. India’s first-ever direct commercial container freight train has reached Nepal, marking a new chapter in rail-based cross-border freight movement. The Railway Ministry said that the train, comprising 40 wagons carrying a consignment of canola, completed its journey under the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol. The successful operation enables direct rail movement of containerised cargo from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar without transshipment at the border.
2. Punjab has been connected with 27 global destinations across North America, UK, Europe and Australia with the launch of Air India’s ‘Easy Connect’ hub-and-spoke model at Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji International Airport, Amritsar, yesterday.
3. World Nature Conservation Day is being observed yesterday globally. This day raises awareness about protecting nature and conserving natural resources to save the earth from the dangers of adverse impacts of climate change.
In 1997, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) declared July 28th as World Nature Conservation Day.
4. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar extended greetings to the Government and people of Peru on their Independence Day yesterday.
5. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with Hua Chunying, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of China and reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral relations in Beijing. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who is on a China visit, also discussed means of advancing the vision that India and China are partners and development opportunities for each other, including through mutually beneficial outcomes across trade and economic ties.
6. On 29th July, 2026 International Tiger Day will be observed worldwide, to raise the global awareness about the conservation of tigers and the urgent need to protect their natural habitats. The day is also known as the World Tiger Day or Global Tiger Day.

1. In Japan, a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck southern Kumamoto Prefecture, knocking out power to thousands of homes, rupturing roads, and injuring at least 50 people.
2. French authorities ordered around 4,000 people to evacuate tourist areas on the Atlantic coast as rising temperatures threatened to reignite a massive wildfire west of Bordeaux.
3. In Libya, protesters stormed into a key energy complex near Tripoli amid anti-government demonstrations over prolonged power outages, raising fears of a nationwide blackout. The protesters entered the Mellitah Oil & Gas complex yesterday and closed the gas lines used to operate power plants to generate electricity.
4. Saudi Arabia said, it has shot down drones fired by Iran-backed militias in Iraq. The statement posted on social media today by the Saudi Defence Ministry came as the US and Iran had paused their attacks over the weekend after weeks of escalation.
5. China completed expert acceptance and full-parameter testing of two domestically developed superconducting magnets on 27 June 2026 at the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Hefei, Anhui Province. The tested systems were a toroidal field superconducting magnet and a high-temperature superconducting central solenoid coil for fusion research.
