1. KATCHATHEEVU Controversy: A tiny island between India and Sri Lanka on Palk Straight has become the hot button issue ahead of the general election in Tamil Nadu, where the BJP is trying to find a toehold. The island of Katchatheevu, a disputed area, was given to Sri Lanka by the Congress government headed by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi through an agreement in 1974. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now posted a message on social media saying the Congress has “callously” given it away.
2. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday (Apr 1) took a dig at China over its claims on Arunachal Pradesh stating that changing names would not have any impact on the fact that the northeastern state is, was and will always be a part of India.
3. Chinese military will conduct a joint live ammunition drill on April 2-3 on the Chinese side of the China-Myanmar border, China shares a 2204-kilometer border with Myanmar on the eastern side. Myanmar shares a 1,643-kilometer border with India on the western side. China, which has a border dispute with India, has friendly ties with Myanmar.
Myanmar also shares a 520-km border with the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims its own territory. Bejing claims that Arunachal is part of Southern Tibet, which Bharath has refuted repeatedly.
4. Joyshree Das Verma has taken over as the 41st National President of the FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) for the year 2024-25. FLO is the oldest women-led and women-centric business chamber of South East Asia.
5. Bangladesh Opposition leaders demanding a boycott of Indian products.
Addressing a meeting of the ruling Awami League, Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina said. “My question is, how many Indian sarees do their (Bangladesh opposition leaders) wives have? And why are they not taking the sarees from their wives and setting them on fire? Please ask BNP leaders,” she said.

1. Pakistan security forces arrest over 10 people involved in last week attack on Chinese engineers. Five Chinese citizens, including a woman, and a Pakistani driver were killed when a suicide bomber crashed his explosive-laden vehicle into the car carrying them.
2. Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended the 14-year sentence given to former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana corruption case. IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq said appeal against the punishment would be fixed for hearing after Eid holidays.
3. The top court of Florida agreed upon the implementation of the state’s six-week abortion ban, however, they gave voters the chance to have their say on the issue.
4. Turkey’s main opposition party has claimed big victories in the main cities of Istanbul and Ankara in local body elections. The results are a significant blow for Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had hoped to regain control of the cities less than a year after he claimed a third term as President.
5. On 1 April 2024, Romania and Bulgaria partially joined the Schengen Area, Europe’s ID-check-free travel zone. This marks a significant step in the two countries’ integration with the European Union (EU).
6. The Hindu community and traders in Pakistan took part in a massive protest that erupted in Sindh province after a Hindu girl was abducted from the area, demanding urgent action from the government. The girl has been identified as Priya Kumari who was abducted from Sukkur days ago. The protests massively took place in Dera Murad Jamali.
