1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands at the Royal Palace, in The Hague during the second leg of his five-nation official visit, underscoring the continued strengthening of India–Netherlands relations.

2. PM Modi congratulated Ali Falih Kadhim al-Zaidi on assuming office as the Prime Minister of Iraq on 16 May 2026. Al-Zaidi took office after being sworn in during a parliamentary session on 14 May 2026.

3. The Netherlands returned the 11th-century Anaimangalam copper plates to India on 15 May 2026. The artefacts are also known as the Leiden Plates and belong to the period of the Chola dynasty in South India.

4. BRICS foreign ministers met in New Delhi on 15 May 2026 and reaffirmed support for an independent and viable State of Palestine within the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The meeting also referred to the Gaza Strip as part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory and linked Palestinian statehood to the two-state solution under international law.

5. Electronics manufacturing company Tata Electronics and Dutch semiconductor equipment major ASML have joined hands to enable chip manufacturing in India. The pact was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands.

1. Eight people were killed and 25 others injured after a train collision triggered a massive fire that engulfed a public bus in Bangkok, Thailand.

2. Sri Lanka has imposed a temporary 50 per cent surcharge on Customs Import Duty for a wide range of imported motor vehicles to protect foreign exchange reserves and ease pressure on the country’s external sector.

3. Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on a two-day trip to Beijing next week.

4. US President Donald Trump has warned Taiwan against formally declaring independence from China. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has previously stated that Taiwan does not need to declare independence, as it already considers itself a sovereign nation. The US has long supported Taiwan, including providing it with means of self-defence under US law, while balancing its diplomatic relationship with China.

5. The United States has celebrated its Armed Forces Day yesterday. The day which falls on the third Saturday in May aims to honor and appreciate all active-duty military members and veterans across every branch of the U.S. armed services. Established in 1949 by then US President Harry S. Truman, the day was created to replace separate Army, Navy, and Air Force Days.

6. Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 45-day extension of their ceasefire after another round of talks in Washington.
