Vijay Deverakonda

Actor Vijay Deverakonda found himself in the midst of controversy after a remark made by him at the pre-release event of the movie Retro irked tribal communities. A case has been registered against him under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for making alleged derogatory comments.

What is the Complaint?

The incident came up at a promotional event in Hyderabad where Deverakonda made a comment that was seen to make a negative reference between ancient tribal societies and current violence. Though he did not name any group, his words were interpreted by some members of the tribal society as insensitive and offensive. The comment went viral, and the public became outraged.

Legal Action Initiated

A written complaint was lodged at SR Nagar police station in Hyderabad by lawyer and president of a tribal legal welfare organization, Kishan Raj Chauhan. The complainant charged the actor with insulting Scheduled Tribes with his public statement. In the wake of this, the police have registered the complaint and stated that the case is now under legal scrutiny. An official First Information Report (FIR) had not been filed as a report at the time of reporting.

Vijay Devarkonda’s Response

Following the increasing outrage, Deverakonda apologized on social media. He said that he did not mean to talk about the present-day tribal communities of India but about ancient human history. The actor clarified that he has the utmost respect for all communities and never wanted to offend anyone’s sentiments.

He clarified that his usage of the term “tribe” was intended in a general or historical context, and not specifically aimed at Scheduled Tribes afforded protection under Indian law.

Public Reaction

While some welcomed the apology, others feel that public figures need to be more careful, particularly when dealing with culturally contentious issues. Activist groups have asked the legal process to continue so that accountability is maintained, irrespective of intentions.

What’s Next?

Police officials said they are contemplating seeking legal advice to ascertain if Vijay Devarkonda’s remarks are covered by the SC/ST Act. The case is currently under preliminary investigation.
