1. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $200 million loan to enhance flood and riverbank erosion risk management along the Brahmaputra River in Assam, India. This project aims to build on previous successful initiatives and address the persistent challenges of flooding and erosion in the region.
2. The 7th IOC was held in Perth, Australia on February 9-10, 2024. The theme was “Towards a Stable and Sustainable Indian Ocean.” It was organized by the India Foundation, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (Singapore) and Perth-US Asia Centre.
3. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said he is confident that the relevance of the Quad grouping would grow and it would become a bigger factor in the larger regional, and beyond the region, politics and policy. Jaishankar’s remarks came during a fireside chat with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong at the Indian Ocean Conference.
4. PM Modi, the President of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth will witness the launch of Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, as well as, RuPay card services in Mauritius, on Monday 1 pm via video conferencing.
5. Indian government has started work on building a new civilian terminal building at the Thoise airbase in the Nubra region in Ladakh, very close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. India has been in an eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation in this sector with Chinese troops for over three years now.
6. PM Modi’s proposed visit to UAE on 13 February 2024 would be his seventh visit to the country as PM. PM Modi is set to inaugurate the grand Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, the first traditional Hindu stone temple in the UAE, on 14 February.
The summit will be a spectacular showcase of Indo-UAE friendship and the rich cultural tapestry of India, featuring over 400 local talents in a series of captivating performances.
7. The Russian ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, on Saturday called for urgent reforms of the United Nations and agencies under it while making a strong case for the inclusion of India as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
