1. BUDGET 2024 : India cuts aid to Maldives, grants to other foreign nations.
(a) The government has reduced its overall allocation for aid to foreign countries for the forthcoming fiscal year by 10%.

(b) India has proposed cutting aid to the Maldives by 22% for the 2024-25 financial year, as per the Interim Budget document released by the government on Thursday.

(c) Maldives has been allocated Rs 600 crore for developmental assistance, the third highest in aid to foreign countries by the government. In 2023-24, Maldives was given Rs 770.90 crore as aid, an increase of over 300 per cent from the Rs 183.16 crore granted in 2022-23.

2. According to the latest International Energy Agency (IEA) projections in Electricity 2024 Report, India’s electricity demand will outpace China’s and have the world’s fastest growth rate by 2026. India’s annual average electricity demand growth is pegged at 6.5% over 2024-2026.

1. The 🇺🇸United States officials have approved plans for a series of strikes against 🇮🇷Iranian personnel and facilities in Iraq and Syria for over a number of days, CBS News reported on Thursday.

The strikes will come in response to drone and rocket attacks targeting US forces in the region, including the recent drone attack that killed three US service members in Jordan and left dozens others injured.

2. United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Thursday (Feb 1) apologised for hiding his prostate cancer diagnosis and hospitalisation from President Joe Biden and the government stating that he did not handle the situation rightly.

The 70-year-old Lloyd Austin underwent surgery on Dec 22 to treat prostate cancer and came back home the same day. However, he was again hospitalised on Jan 1 for complications including nausea and severe pain and was discharged on Jan 15.

3. The asteroid, named 2008 OS7 is believed to be between 690 and 1,570 feet in width to fly past Earth on 2nd Feb. The asteroid will pass Earth at a distance of around 1.77 million milesmiles, at the speed of 18.2km per second and will make its closest flyby in the afternoon of 2nd February.

4. 🇰🇪Kenya has officially announced the discovery of coltan deposits within its borders for the first time. Coltan, short for columbite-tantalite, is a valuable mineral composed of niobium and tantalum that is integral to producing electronics like smartphones and electric cars.

5. Another Indian student has been found dead in Cincinnati, United States, and the cause of his death remains unknown. The student has been identified as Shreyas Reddy Benigeri. This marks the third instance of an Indian student’s death in the US in a week’s time.

6. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurates the month-long Amar Ekushey Book Fair in Dhaka.

7. US military carries out new strikes against 10 drones belonging to Houthi rebels in Yemen.

8. In Bangladesh: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Bangladesh on Thursday filed a charge sheet against Nobel Laureate and Grameen Telecom Chairman Dr Muhammad Yunus and 13 others in a case filed for embezzling Taka 25 crore from the fund reserved for the workers.
