1. 1. The Central government offices will be closed for half day till 2.30 PM on 22nd of this month on the occasion of the Ram Lalla Pran Pratishtha at Ayodhya. In its order, the Department of Personnel said, the decision has been taken to enable employees to participate in the celebrations. The order applies to all Central Government Offices, Central Institutions and Central Industrial Establishments throughout the country.

2. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that cold to severe cold wave conditions are likely to continue over plains of Northwest India during next two days.

He said, the government is making relentless efforts to make the country the third largest aviation sector in the world in next three years from the fifth position currently. He said the domestic passenger market will grow to 300 million by 2030.

9. India has witnessed 300 percent rise in sales of electric vehicles (EVs) since inception. Minister of Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said that India is committed to reducing pollution in the country as per the Paris climate accord.

10. Union Fisheries Minister Parshottam Rupala inaugurated an artificial reef project in Vizhinjam, Kerala. This initiative aims to double the income of fishermen by enhancing fish stocks and contributing to the economic well-being of the local fishing community.

The Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) S Somanath emphasized the pivotal role of space technologies in various sectors ranging from agriculture and remote sensing to navigation, transport, water resources, infrastructure, and more. He was addressing the session of ‘Student Innovation Festival – Space Hackathon’ on second day of Indian International Science Festival 2023 at Faridabad in Haryana.

12. PM Modi will visit various temples in Tamil Nadu on Saturday. He will participate in a programme at Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Tiruchirappalli. On Sunday, Prime Minister will perform Darshan and Pooja at Kothandaramaswamy Temple, Dhanushkodi. He will also visit Arichal Munai, which is said to be the place from where the Ram Setu was built.

13. PM Modi released six commemorative postage stamps on Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Mandir. He also released an album of stamps issued on Lord Ram around the world.

In a significant move to enhance the efficiency of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system and streamline traffic at Toll Plazas, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative. This strategic measure aims to curb the prevalent practice of using a single FASTag for multiple vehicles or linking multiple FASTags to a specific vehicle.

15. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik recently unveiled the Shree Mandir Parikrama Prakalpa (SMPP), a large development project around Puri’s 12th century Shree Jagannath Temple. The project aims to transform Puri into a world-class heritage destination for pilgrims.

The SMPP (Shree Mandir Parikrama Prakalpa) introduces a 75-meter-wide space around the temple, referred to as the heritage corridor. This expansive area has been meticulously divided into nine distinct zones, each serving a specific purpose aimed at enhancing the overall experience for visitors and preserving the cultural heritage surrounding the Shree Jagannath Temple.

16. The Centre urges all doctors and medical colleges in the country to specify reasons while prescribing anti-microbials. Directorate General of Health Services, DGHS issues a directive to all doctors in medical colleges in this regard.

17. The Union Cabinet has approved the creation of three posts at the level of Joint Secretary – two posts of Joint Secretary and one post of Economic Adviser – for the 16th Finance Commission, the government said, all other posts in the Commission have already been created as per the delegated powers.

18. A new idol of Lord Ram was placed in the sanctum sanctorum of Ayodhya’s Ram Janmabhoomi temple on Thursday afternoon, ahead of the January 22 consecration ceremony.

Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravishankar on Wednesday reacted to Jyotishmath Shankaracharya Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati’s criticism of the Ram Temple event, saying Lord Ram himself established a Shivling without a temple. (Shankaracharya had said he wouldn’t attend the January 22 event as Lord Ram’s idol will be installed in an under-construction temple).

20. Karnataka announces tax concessions for switching to electric vehicles after scrapping old vehicles. The concession for two-wheelers ranges from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 to Rs 40,000 for four-wheelers.

21. Goverment sets age limit for coaching centers: No enrollment below 16 years. It comes following complaints received by the government about rising cases of student suicides, fire incidents, lack of facilities in coaching incidents as well as methodologies of teaching adopted by them.

1. 12 students, 2 teachers die as picnic boat overturns in Gujarat. A boat capsized in Harni lake on the outskirts of Vadodara city in Gujarat on Thursday, while 18 students and two teachers were rescued,
only 10 students on board were wearing life jackets.

2. A security personnel was killed and another two suffered injuries in a landmine blast near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on Thursday. The troops were patrolling the forward area in Nowshera sector when the explosion occurred.

An FIR under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and two persons have been arrested.

1. Adani Enterprises will invest ₹ 50,000 crore in Maharashtra over the next 10 years.

2. Ministry of Textiles has approved 11 project proposals, including nine Research and Development projects, valuing 103 Crore rupees across different areas of Technical Textiles.

Mahindra Aerostructures Pvt Ltd (MASPL) and Airbus Aerostructures GmbH have signed a new contract for the manufacture and delivery of metallic components for all Airbus commercial aircraft models, including the best-selling A320 family. Under the contract, MASPL will supply close to 5000 varieties of metallic components to Airbus in Germany from its manufacturing base in India.

4. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved a proposal for equity investments for setting up two thermal power plants in the country. These power plants will be set up by the subsidiaries of Coal India Limited to provide cheaper and affordable power to the people.

5. The Finance Ministry invited public comments on the draft Indian Stamp Bill, 2023. The Bill aims to modernize stamp duty provisions and replace the 1899 Stamp Act.

1. The Indian Navy said on Thursday it had rescued the crew of a US-owned vessel in the Gulf of Aden after an attack by Yemen’s Houthi movement as tensions in the region’s sea lanes disrupted global trade.

2. In a swift and commendable operation, INS Visakhapatnam, deployed for anti-piracy missions in the Gulf of Aden, responded to a distress call from the Marshall Island flagged MV Genco Picardy. The vessel had come under a drone attack at 11:30 PM on January 17, 2024.

Acknowledging the distress call, INS Visakhapatnam intercepted MV Genco Picardy at 12:30 AM on January 18, 2024. With 22 crew members on board, including 9 Indians, the distressed vessel reported no casualties, and the fire was under control.

3. An eyewitness in a special CBI court on Thursday identified Hurriyat leader and JKLF chief Yasin Malik as the main shooter firing at Indian Air Force personnel in Srinagar in 1990, The incident, which occurred on January 25, 1990, at Rawalpora on the outskirts of Srinagar.

4. The US leads the military strength rankings, followed by Russia and China in 2nd and 3rd spots. India placed 4th for the second straight year. Pakistan ranked 9th.

NAVY TO SHOWCASE RISING COMBAT PROWESS ‘ATMANIRBHARTA’ NARI-SHAKTI AT REPUBLIC DAY PARADE : The naval tableau will depict the first fully indigenous Carrier Battle Group, comprising aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, her highly capable escort ships Delhi, Kolkata, Shivalik, and Kalvari class submarine besides light combat aircraft as well as advanced light helicopter.

The contingent of the Indian Navy will have three women platoon commanders — Lt Mudita Goyal, Lt Sharvani Supreiya and Lt Devika H.

For the first time, the Navy will have a mixed composition with 144 young men and women marching down the historic Kartavya path reflecting its commitment towards gender neutrality.
