1. Israel said on Monday that a team had visited Lakshadweep last year and the country is ready to commence working on a desalination programme in the islands.

Indian online travel company Make My Trip on Monday said that it has observed a whopping 3,400 per cent increase in on-platform searches for beach destination Lakshadweep ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the archipelago.

2. Indians, including cricketers and film celebrities, have since come out in open support in promoting local beach destinations and other tourist spots. They also voiced support for PM Modi’s call for promoting beach tourism in Lakshadweep. PM Modi visited the Union Territory of Lakshadweep on January 2 and shared several pictures, including an ‘exhilarating experience’ of trying his hand at snorkelling.

3. India on Monday summoned Maldives High Commissioner Ibrahim Shaheeb amid the row over Maldivian ministers’ objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his ‘Visit Lakshadweep’ pitch. Visuals on social media showed the Maldivian envoy reaching the south block of the External Affairs Ministry in Delhi and later leaving the venue.

4. Former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih condemned the use of ‘hateful language’ against India by government officials on social media, saying New Delhi has always been a good friend to the island nation.

5. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to his Austrian counterpart Alexander Schallenberg on Monday and discussed the situation in Ukraine and Gaza.

1. Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad on Monday (Jan 8) released video footage which it claimed showed an Israeli hostage alive in its custody in Gaza after being held hostage during Hamas’ Oct 7 assault against Israel.

2. A Pakistan special court on Monday issued release orders for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan after his bail was confirmed by the Pakistan Supreme Court in an official Secrets Act casecase.

3. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina won the re-election for a fifth term in the national election that were conducted on Sunday amidst the boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former PM Khaleda Zia, who is currently in jail. Awami League secures majority in 12th national election.

4. French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne on Monday resigned from her post as President Emmanuel Macron was preparing to announce a long-awaited cabinet reshuffle. It is being reported in media that Education Minister Gabriel Attal (34) is a favourite to succeed Borne but no official announcement was made.

5. Pope Francis on Monday called for a global ban on parenting via surrogacy, which is an arrangement in which a woman agrees to carry and give birth to a child on behalf of another person or couple. The woman is known as the surrogate and the other party is called the intended parent.
