bangladesh to hold general elections on january 7

Bangladesh will hold the much-awaited general elections on January 7, the country’s chief election commissioner announced on Wednesday. The announcement came amid mounting political tensions as Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its far-right allies like the Jamaat-e-Islami have waged a street campaign demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government to allow a non-party interim government to conduct the general elections.

1. Union Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju will represent India at the oath-taking ceremony of Maldivian President-elect Mohamed MuizzuRijiju will be on an two-day official visit to the island nation from Thursday at the invitation of the President-elect of the Maldives, Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

1. Mauritius is hosting the third Ministerial Conference on Maritime Security and Safety in the Western Indian Ocean on Thursday at the Intercontinental Hotel in Balaclava.The Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, will preside over the official launch of the Ministerial Conference.

2. International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Wednesday said the agreement for the release of the second tranche, amounting to USD 3 billion under the Standby Arrangement (SBA) with Pakistan is expected this week.

5. In 🇧🇩Bangladesh: 12th parliamentary election will be held on January 7, 2024. Chief Election Commissioner, Kazi Habibul Awal announced the polls schedule in Dhaka.

6. The US House of Representatives passed a temporary spending bill by 336 votes in favour versus 95 votes against, with support from lawmakers on both sides.

The bill aims to extend government funding till mid-January, thereby averting a government shutdown for the time being. It will now proceed to the Senate for approval.

7. China’s finance ministry has introduced a proposal suggesting that auditors should undergo or conduct extra cybersecurity checks, especially when their work involves national security considerations.
