1. Today is MUHARRAM, It was commenced on 19th July 2023. The 10th day of Muharram as Ashura will be observed today, on 29 July, 2023. “Ashura” is derived from the Arabic word for the number 10.
Muharram holds an immense importance among Muslims. This day commemorates the death of the prophet Muhammed’s grandson, Hussein Ibn Ali. On the day of Ashura, the Shia Muslim community gather in mosques to pray and mourn. People gather on large scales to pray and express their grief since it is a day of commemoration. It marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the son of Hazrat Ali and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.

6. A youth was dragged for around 1 km after being tied to a scooty on a busy road in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly. A CCTV footage of the same surfaced online. The police have launched a probe into the matter, saying that strict action will be taken against the culprits.

1. US-based Silicon Power will invest ₹1,000 crore to set up a silicon carbide manufacturing plant in the Odisha state. The investment will be made by the company’s Indian unit RIR Power Electronics.
2. PIRAMAL ENTERPRISES TO BUY BACK ₹1,750 CRORE SHARES AFTER 12 YEARS: Piramal Enterprises announced a share buyback scheme worth ₹1,750 crore at ₹1,250/piece via tender route. The company plans to buy back 5.87% of the total shares and the company’s promoter and promoter group have expressed their intention not to participate in the buyback.
3. Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal said his company and Foxconn remain the “best of friends” and JV didn’t work out due to differences in vision. Meanwhile, Foxconn Chairman & CEO Young Liu said Foxconn remains unwavering in its commitment to India’s semiconductor sector and will continue to work closely with Vedanta in many other industries, particularly in the growing fibre sector.
4. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a hefty fine of ₹30 lakh on IndiGo, a prominent Indian airline, for tail strikes during landings. Tail strikes occur when an aircraft’s tail inadvertently touches the runway during landing, posing serious safety concerns.
5. India’s foreign exchange reserves saw a dip of $1.9 billion, dragging the reserves to $607.03 for the week ending on July 21, Reserve Bank of India’s data showed.

1. Indian Naval Ship ‘Khanjar,’ an indigenous Khukri class Missile Corvette will visit Trincomalee from the 29th of July. The ship will conduct interactions on special operations such as Visit-Board-Search and Seizure(VBSS), Gunnery, and Missile Operations.
2. The Defence Ministry has said that no cases, withdrawn in 2019, are being reopened regarding disability pensions to veterans.
The Ministry has termed the media report in this regard as misleading and factually incorrect. It said, the Ministry has gone for appeal only in those cases where the Medical Boards have clearly stated that injury or disability is Neither Attributable Nor Aggravated (NANA) by military service.
3. Two Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters rescued six persons who were stranded atop a JCB in flood-stricken Nainpaka village in Telangana.
4. An autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) designed to detect mines and a first of its kind in the country was launched on Friday. The AUV named ‘Neerakshi’ is a collaboration of Kolkata-based war ship maker Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd and MSME entity AEPL.
5. The Indian Navy is gearing up for the trials of what will be its first indigenously-developed, ocean-going multirole unmanned surface vessel (USV) for surveillance and minesweeping.
The boat was jointly designed and developed by the Weapon and Electronic Systems Engineering Establishment (WESEE) and Bharat Electronic Ltd (BEL), along with Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL).
