1. Heavy rains lash many parts of Northern India; At least 12 killed in rain related incidents in different states.
Normal life has been affected severely in many parts of the country due to continuous monsoon rain on 9th July 2023, Sunday.

In the national capital Delhi, heavy rain continued on 9th July 2023, Sunday. The Safdarjung observatory in the city recorded 106 mm rainfall while Delhi Ridge recorded 65 mm and Ayanagar 44 mm on 9th July 2023, Sunday. Delhi recorded 153 mm of rain in the last 24 hours, the highest in a single day in July since 1982. It was the third-highest single-day rainfall for July since 1958.

2. All schools of Noida would remain closed in view of heavy rainfall in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida. Moreover, in view of the heavy rains in Gautam Budh Nagar, the schools from class first to class 12 will remain closed on July 10.

3. The Northern Railways has cancelled around 17 trains and diverted around 12 others due to heavy rains in several parts of the region.

4. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday spoke to Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha and took updates about Amarnath Yatra which was suspended due to heavy rainfall. Official sources said, in view of incessant rainfall in the national capital.

5. Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram (VKS) a tribal body affiliated with Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), on July 9 said that it welcomes the ‘role’ of BJP MP Sushil Kumar Modi, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, to keep the tribes out of Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

6. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) said that it has sent its objections on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to the Law Commission and has demanded that “not just tribals but every religious minority should be kept out of the purview of such a statute”.

1. West Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) on Sunday announced that re-polling will be held on Monday in 604 booths where voting for the rural elections has been declared “void”. Re-polling is going to be held in Purulia, Birbhum, Jalpaiguri and South 24 Parganas, among others. The SEC passed the order after reportedly going through reports of vote-tampering and violence.

2. Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) on Sunday arrested former Deputy CM OP Soni for allegedly accumulating assets disproportionate to his known sources of income between 2016 and 2022.

3. In Ladakh, one person has been killed after falling rock hit a truck and a car near Village Pandrass of Drass at Srinagar-Leh NH1D National Highway.

5. (CBI) on Sunday summoned the station master of Bahanaga Bazar Station in Odisha’s Balasore district in connection with the July 2 train crash that left 293 persons killed and nearly a thousand people injured.

The CBI has asked station master SB Mohanty to appear at its Bhubaneswar office on July 11.

1. India’s forex reserves rise by USD 1.85 billion to USD 595.05 billion: RBI said.

1. Operating without legal cover provided by the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is a major limitation for security forces operating in Manipur in the current situation, Army sources say.

2. In March this year, the Central government had removed AFSPA from one district of Assam, and within the limits of four police stations (Wangoi, Leimakhong, Nambol and Moirang) in Manipur.

This took the number of police-station limits without AFSPA to 19 spanning seven districts of Manipur.

Home Minister Amit Shah had said on March 25 that the Centre had decided to “reduce the Disturbed Areas” under the AFSPA in Nagaland, Assam and Manipur due to the “significant improvement in the security situation in Northeast India.”

3. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will pay an official visit to Malaysia on July 10-11, 2023, with focus on further consolidating bilateral defence cooperation and Enhanced Strategic Partnership.The Raksha Mantri will hold bilateral talks with Defence Minister of Malaysia Mr Dato’ Seri Mohamad Hasan.

4. ARMED FORCES DRAW PROPOSAL TO ABSORB 50% MORE AGNIVEERS: The ambitious Agnipath scheme might see some changes as the armed forces are mulling ways to obviate problems that may arise in the future.

These problems, among many, include the decline in the numbers of personnel at the soldier’s levels due to the restricted number of recruitments planned up till 2026.

(a) 2022 and 2026, around 1.75 lakh Agniveers are expected to be recruited. The aim of the proposals is “to make up for the decline in a planned manner. Otherwise, it might turn into bigger problems, functional and operational,” sources said.

(b) The intake of Agniveers will go up to 1.25 lakh in the near future and will not remain at 46,000, which is the present figure.

(C) The cap in the maximum recruitment age to 21 years is leaving a smaller pool of eligible candidates. Thus, the proposal is to raise this to 23 years so that we can get the youth passing out of polytechnic.
