1. IIT Madras launched Phiball on 28 August 2026 on its Chennai campus. Phiball is a three-team competitive invasion sport with rules designed for lower space and infrastructure requirements than conventional basketball.
Phiball Format and Rules
Phiball uses three competing teams in each match. Each team has seven registered players, including four active on-field players and three substitutes. The game is played over three eight-minute quarters, and each basket carries one to three points. Teams rotate the basket they defend after each quarter.
2. Gujarat has launched the India’s first state-level Sports Genomics Programme. The programme attempts to incorporate genomics in sports science, physiology and nutrition to provide a more scientific basis for identifying athletes and training them at high performance level. Under the supervision of Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC), the programme has already commenced collecting samples of athletes in various sports categories.
3. Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa created history, becoming the first Indian to win the Grand Chess Tour after staging a stunning comeback to defeat defending champion Fabiano Caruana 15-13 in the final at St. Louis in the US.
