1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met founders and CEOs of 20 Indian space-tech startups in New Delhi on 21 August 2026, urging them to expand private-sector applications in agriculture, environment, livestock, and education to directly improve everyday lives and position India as a global space hub.

2. PM Modi has said India is being seen as bright spot of growth throughout the globe even as the world has many concerns regarding growth and resources are getting weaponised. Addressing the Economic Times World Leaders Forum in New Delhi yesterday.

3. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reiterated that the zero tolerance policy against illegal immigrants will continue and the Detect, Delete and Deport process will be strictly followed. The Home Minister was addressing a gathering in Siliguri West Bengal yesterday after inaugurating a 6-day awareness exhibition on the Bhartiya Nyay Samhita at Kawakhali Ground.

4. The government has assured that adequate sugar stocks are available to meet domestic demand, despite lower-than-estimated production. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said it is closely monitoring the recent rise in sugar prices and has taken measures to ensure sufficient availability and stable prices.

5. Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda reviewed the prevailing situation and preparedness for H1N1 Influenza in the country with particular focus on the National Capital.

6. The Lucknow Division of the North Eastern Railway (NER) operated the “Awadh Mahashakti” freight train on 20 August 2026. The train was formed by combining three cargo trains and ran as the longest train in the history of the zonal railway.

7. India’s first large-scale biopolymer plant is under construction in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh and is scheduled for commissioning in October 2026. The facility is being developed at the Kumbhi sugar unit of Balrampur Chini Mills in Gola Gokarannath and is planned as a fully integrated industrial campus.

8. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in several parts of India, with warnings covering areas including Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and parts of central and eastern India. Thunderstorms and lightning are also possible in several areas.

1. Supreme Court Gives Relief to 105-Year-Old Convict
The Supreme Court ordered the release of 105-year-old Rasik Mandal, allowing him to spend his remaining years with his family.
Born in 1920, he was arrested for murder in 1988 at age 68 and convicted in 1994.
His appeals were rejected by the Calcutta High Court in 2018 and the Supreme Court in 2019.
Due to his advanced age and health problems, he sought premature release, which the Supreme Court has now granted.

2. The Supreme Court of India reduced the mandatory active bar practice requirement for entry-level judicial service candidates from three years to one year for Civil Judge, Junior Division posts. The decision came in a 2:1 split verdict delivered by a three-judge bench on a review petition and modified the court’s earlier judgment of 20 May 2025.

3. Interpol issued a Red Corner Notice against fugitive gangster Shariq Sata. Indian authorities and the Uttar Pradesh Police identified him as the prime conspirator behind the 24 November 2024, violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. Sata is believed to be operating from Dubai.

The Incident: Clashes erupted in Sambhal during a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, resulting in four deaths and multiple injuries to civilians and police.The Mastermind: Investigators claim Sata planned and orchestrated the unrest remotely from abroad.Sata allegedly fled India for Dubai using a forged passport in 2020.

4. “Reservation Hatao Andolan” at the national capital’s iconic Ramlila Ground on Friday: Delhi Police, along with the Rapid Action Force, detained protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar. The protest remains active in Delhi even as the permitted time has passed. Delhi Police’s no-objection certificate (NOC) permitted a gathering of up to 500 people at Ramlila Maidan until 4 pm. The protesters, however, have remained at Jantar Mantar and exceeded the permitted time.

1. The Defence Ministry signed a ₹1,943-crore, 30-month lease for two additional MQ-9B Sea Guardian drones to strengthen maritime surveillance in the Indian Ocean region.

2. DRDO has invited Indian private defence companies to partner in developing and producing strategic missile and bomb systems, supporting greater domestic defence manufacturing.

3. India recently conducted a successful test of the Kusha long-range surface-to-air missile programme. The system is intended to provide a domestic long-range air-defence capability.

4. The latest major defence exercise is Exercise MAITREE-XV, a bilateral military drill between India and Thailand.

The exercise started on 18 August 2026, and will run until August 31, 2026. It is currently taking place at the Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani, Thailand.

Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026: The highly anticipated India-US joint military exercise is scheduled next for September 2026. It will focus on long-range precision fires and counter-drone warfare across desert and high-altitude terrains.

5. The Indian Navy is rapidly expanding its fleet through domestic shipbuilding. The goal is to reach a force of nearly 200 warships by 2035. Over 50 major vessels are currently under construction in domestic shipyards, with new made-in-India platforms joining the service roughly every 40 days.
