11. The government has allowed duty-free imports of up to 10 lakh metric tonnes of raw sugar until 31st of October this year. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), in a notification issued yesterday, said imports of raw sugar will be allowed without duty under a tariff rate quota (TRQ) of 10 lakh metric tonnes, subject to specified conditions.
12. The 31st South Zone Council meeting concluded in Mahabalipuram near Chennai under the chairmanship of the Home Minister Amit Shah. The meeting gave an opportunity to the Chief Ministers and Senior Officials to engage among themselves to discuss shared priorities and issues concerning the progress, development and interests of the region.
13. PhonePe signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on 20 August 2026 for integration of its enterprise data intelligence platform, PulsePro, into the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan portal. The integration is being coordinated with the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics, which works on geospatial and space-based applications for government projects.
14. Former Indian National Congress MP Sajjan Kumar died at the age of 80 on 20 August 2026. He was serving a life sentence in connection with cases linked to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He had represented the Outer Delhi constituency in the Lok Sabha three times.

Calls for Nepal to allow its citizens to join the Indian Army under its Agnipath scheme have grown louder ahead of Indian Army chief General Dhiraj Seth’s scheduled participation in an ex-servicemen rally for Gorkha veterans in Pokhara on Wednesday, bringing the stalled recruitment issue back into focus during his three-day Nepal visit.
2. Agniveer Arjun Rana, a young soldier from Salang village under Tikru Panchayat in the Jogindernagar tehsil of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, has been awarded the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Commendation Medal for displaying exceptional courage during a militant attack on an Army camp in Assam. He was recruited into the Indian Army in 2024 under the Agniveer scheme and serves with the 19 Grenadiers.
