I Want To Be A Pilot” (2006) by Diego Quemada-Diez

I Want To Be A Pilot by Diego Quemada Diez

Twelve-year-old Omondi lives in the biggest slum in East Africa. Everyday he sees airplanes fly over him. He dreams of becoming an airline pilot, and flying far away.

This award-winning Kenyan-Mexican short documentary film deals with a young child’s dream of escape. The child’s description of the dream seems innocent at first, but soon takes on more complex layers with great honesty and courage. The film addresses problems of poverty, globalization, racism, devastation caused by HIV and the stigma attached to it – all from the very personal and innocent lens of a child growing up in this reality.
No matter how limited or vast your knowledge is about life in Africa, watch this film to add a new perspective to it.
