Magenta Shores, NSW, Australia, March 5: Diksha Dagar emerged as the best-placed Indian after the opening round of the Australian Women’s Classic on the Ladies European Tour (LET) at the Magenta Shores Golf & Country Club on Thursday. The Indian star carded a three-under 69 despite an inconsistent start to her round.
Beginning from the back nine, Diksha had an early setback with a bogey on her opening hole. She quickly recovered and produced an impressive stretch with three birdies across the next four holes to move into red figures. A bogey on the 18th hole saw her make the turn at one-under-par. She then steadied her game on the front nine and added two more birdies to finish the round at three-under, placing herself as the leading Indian in the field after day one.
Czech Republic’s Sara Kouskova grabbed the early lead after producing a sensational eight-under 64, setting a new course record at Magenta Shores. The two-time LET winner enjoyed near-perfect conditions in New South Wales and capitalised with a flawless round that included eight birdies and no bogeys.
Kouskova’s accuracy was key to her performance as she hit all 18 greens in regulation and missed just one fairway during the round. Her outstanding effort gave her a two-shot lead at the top of the leaderboard after the first day.
Three players are tied for second place at six-under-par, two shots behind the leader. New Zealand’s Momoka Kobori, Ecuador’s Daniela Darquea and Australia’s Kelsey Bennett share the position after strong opening rounds. Kobori was particularly impressive early on, playing her first nine holes in just 30 strokes to reach six-under.
Among the other Indians in the field, Pranavi Urs finished with an even-par 72 and was placed tied 52nd after a mixed round that featured two birdies, an eagle, a bogey and a double bogey.
Avani Prashanth struggled to gain momentum and returned a five-over 77 to be placed tied 118th, while Hitaashee Bakshi had a difficult day and signed for an 82.
Five players share fifth place at five-under-par after the opening round. The group includes Thailand’s Trichat Cheenglab and Sasikarn Somboonsup, France’s Celine Herbin, Denmark’s Sofie Kibsgaard and Austria’s Katharina Muehlbauer.
