Acclaimed actor Shabana Azmi and filmmakers Ritesh Batra (Lunchbox) and Shaunak Sen (All That Breathes) have come on board Humans in the Loop as Executive Producers, rallying behind the film as it contends for Best Original Screenplay at the 98th Academy Awards. Their support underscores the industry’s growing recognition of the film’s singular voice and its deeply human exploration of artificial intelligence.

Written and directed by Aranya Sahay and produced by Mathivanan Rajendran, Humans in the Loop follows an indigenous woman living in a remote Indian village who is tasked with training artificial intelligence systems. The screenplay delicately examines the friction between indigenous knowledge systems and contemporary technology, drawing poignant parallels between the care required to raise a child and the responsibility involved in shaping intelligent machines. Inspired by a news article, the script was developed at a lab hosted by the Museum of Imagined Futures and unfolds across three chapters.

Speaking about the film, Filmmaker Ritesh Batra said “What moved me about Humans in the Loop is its tenderness. It looks at systems and data, but listens closely to the people inside them, their pauses, their compromises, and their need to be seen.”

“It is a beautiful story, told very simply with a heart. It makes you sensitive to what is happening around us in the world. It is a film that touches and enriches you in many ways.” Added celebrated actor, Shabana Azmi.

Adding to it, Filmmaker Shaunak Sen spoke about the screenplay’s ethical attentiveness saying “Humans in the Loop is attentive to the quiet spaces where technology meets lived experience. Rather than offering answers, the film stays with the ethical uncertainty of technological progress and the people whose lives are shaped by it.”

The film also drawn praise from filmmaker Shekhar Kapur who said “ The film is written in such a way that it reminds us that in the pauses between technology and humanity lies something more ethereal, the responsibility of choice”

Over the course of its development and release, Humans in the Loop has drawn strong backing from across the film community. Executive producer Bijjo Toppo shepherded its early development, with filmmaker Kiran Rao supporting Indian distribution and Misaq Kazimi leading the film’s U.S. launch. The film is a recipient of the 2025 Film Independent Sloan Distribution Grant, awarded to projects engaging meaningfully with science.

The film has also partnered with Impact Advisors Ketki Parikh and Priya Samant to further support the film’s outreach and engagement efforts within the US, with a group of Impact Ambassadors which include Aroon Shivdasani, founding member of the Indo American Arts Council; Vikas Khanna, celebrity chef, and media entrepreneurs Medha Jaishankar, and Sanjay Sharma.

Commenting on the support the film has been drawing, film director Aranya Sahay said “I feel deeply honoured that artists whose work has inspired me have connected with this film. It began as a short script and gradually evolved into the feature we see today, and that journey has been a labor of love.”

Humans in the Loop was made available to Academy members via the Academy Screening Room earlier this year and debuted on Netflix last November, continuing its journey toward awards recognition and social impact screenings organised to discuss the role of AI and indigenous voices in society.
