1. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced its first mission of 2026, tentatively scheduled for 10 January, marking a significant commencement to the year’s space activities.This PSLV-C62/EOS-N1 mission will lift off from the First Launch Pad at Sriharikota’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre, utilising the reliable Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle in its 64th flight.

2. Former diplomat Suresh K Goel dismissed Pakistani reports of a handshake between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq as laughable.The brief interaction occurred on the sidelines of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s funeral in Dhaka.

3. India and Pakistan have exchanged lists of their nuclear installations and facilities on 1 January 2026, marking the 35th consecutive annual exchange under a longstanding bilateral agreement.

4. The Sri Lanka Navy has recognised eight foreign naval vessels, including two from India, for their pivotal role in delivering humanitarian assistance following the devastating Cyclone Ditwah.This cyclone struck the island nation in late November 2025, claiming over 600 lives and causing widespread destruction through flooding, landslides, and infrastructure collapse.

5. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has claimed that Beijing mediated tensions between India and Pakistan during their brief military confrontation in May 2025, listing it alongside other global conflicts such as those in Myanmar and the Middle East.This assertion, made at the Symposium on the International Situation and China’s Foreign Relations on 30 December 2025.

6. Guyana has extended a formal invitation to Indian companies to participate in its upcoming oil blocks auction scheduled for 2026, marking a significant step in diversifying its burgeoning energy sector.

7. India and Bangladesh have begun talks on renewing the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, set to expire in Dec 2026 – 30 years after it was signed.

8. The India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) has come into effect granting all Indian exports a duty-free access in the Australian market. Under the agreement, 100 percent of Indian tariff lines will get duty-free access benefiting key sectors like gems and jewellery, textiles, leather, footwear, furniture, food products, engineering goods, medical devices and automobiles.

1. In Switzerland, many people are feared dead and more than 100 injured after an explosion and fire ripped through the ‘Le Constellation’ bar in Crans-Montana ski resort in Valais Canton on New Year’s Eve.

2. Bulgaria joined the eurozone and adopted the euro as its official currency on New Year’s Day, becoming the 21st member of the euro area. To ensure a smooth transition, the Bulgarian lev will remain in circulation alongside the euro throughout January. From February 1, the euro will become the country’s sole legal tender.

3. Iran has appointed a new central bank governor following the resignation of the incumbent amid mass protests triggered by a sharp fall in the national currency.

4. In Pakistan, at least 14 passengers were killed and 16 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a van in Punjab province.
