India is in for a considerably cooler winter this year, as the India Meteorological Department—IMD has warned of below-normal temperatures in many states in the north and central parts of the country. The new seasonal outlook indicates that below-normal temperatures are going to prevail from December to February. This shift is very likely to be more pronounced in the plains of North India, already known for a sharp drop in temperatures during peak winter months.
Increase in Cold Wave Days Likely
In addition to the decline in minimum temperatures, there is also a warning issued from the IMD of a sharp rise in the frequency of cold wave days. Large parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh may face more frequent and longer spells of cold waves than in previous years. These can cause intense discomfort among the inhabitants, especially the vulnerable sections like children, elderly people, and outdoor workers. According to meteorologists, the cold wave spells are expected to be stronger due to large-scale climatic features and the absence of warm western disturbances during certain periods.
Impact on Pollution and Fog The forecast by IMD is also indicative of possible problems related to air quality and visibility. If the temperature goes down sharply, the probability of dense fog episodes becomes high, especially over Delhi-NCR, parts of Uttar Pradesh, and the Indo-Gangetic plains. Fog, along with stagnant winter winds, often leads to the aggravation of pollution that causes extended periods of poor air quality. The coming months may therefore see a repeat of last year’s conditions, where smog lingered for days, affecting transport, health, and daily life. Precautions and advisors from the IMD authorities have been urged to make preparations in advance as winter is expected to be severe this time. According to health experts, residents should wear adequate winter gear and avoid exposing themselves during the morning hours.
They should also monitor respiratory distress during this period. The IMD has stressed that timely advisories would be issued to facilitate states in dealing with cold wave conditions, fog-related disruptions, and pollution-related health concerns. Citizens are requested to keep themselves updated about any weather alerts on official channels. What to Expect Over the Coming Months While the month of December may pass comparatively mild in certain areas, January and February are foreseen to bring sharp cold spells over a wide swath of the country. And therefore, according to the IMD’s outlook, winter this year is likely to be longer, sharper, and more effective duty calls for early preparation on the part of both citizens and the administration.
