The grand, 77-foot bronze statue of Lord Ram in Goa was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. This is a very significant cultural and spiritual milestone for the coastal state. Massive crowds thronged the unveiling of the monument as devotees, local leaders, and artists gathered to witness what many described as a “historic milestone” in Goa’s cultural landscape.
A Tribute to the Ramayana Tradition in the Konkan Region
The colossal statue, mounted on a specially designed pedestal, is intended to underscore the deep-rooted influence of the Ramayana across the Konkan belt. State officials said the project was envisioned as a symbol of devotion, unity, and cultural pride, showcasing Goa’s long-standing spiritual connection with the epic.
Crafted by famed sculptors several years ago, the bronze figure shows Lord Ram in a classic stance, his bow in place, with calm strength upon his face. Artists working on the project said the statue was designed to withstand the weather conditions at sea but not at the cost of its artistic finesse.
Modi Calls It a ‘Monument of Faith and Inspiration’
Addressing the gathering at the unveiling ceremony, PM Modi termed the structure as much more than a physical one. He termed it “a monument of faith that will inspire generations,” underlining how the ideals of Lord Ram continue to guide India’s cultural and moral barometer even today.
Modi mentioned other works in the country for the restoration of cultural heritage, underlining that there is now an awakening in the country toward ancient traditions. The Ram statue installed in Goa reflects both devotion and national pride, he said.
Massive Gathering and Cultural Performances
As thousands of devotees attended the event, the venue transformed into a festive congregation. The celebration was marked with traditional Goan performances, dance sequences from Ramayana, and devotional music. Local priests conducted rituals before the statue was unveiled, while the sea breeze and sunset backdrop added grandeur to the ceremony.
Elaborate security arrangements were made for the event, with several agencies working in coordination for smooth movement and crowd management. Volunteers from various cultural organisations also helped manage the massive turnout.
Boost to Tourism and Cultural Projects
According to officials, the 77-foot statue is expected to become a major tourist draw, adding a new spiritual landmark to Goa’s diverse tourism map. The surrounding area is proposed to be developed with visitors’ amenities like walkways, viewing platforms, and a small Ramayana interpretation centre. The state government believes that the statute will attract pilgrims and tourists not only from Goa but from across the country, strengthening the region’s cultural tourism circuit.
