Rajamouli explained that he has always been a rational thinker and doesn’t follow traditional religious beliefs. Despite that, he admitted that during a particularly difficult phase in his life, he instinctively found himself hoping for divine help. He revealed that at that moment of vulnerability, he prayed to Lord Hanuman—something unusual for him.

He says when things did not work out the way he had hoped, he felt disappointed, as if Hanuman hadn’t listened. “For someone who claims not to believe, that emotion surprised me,” he shares. He adds this incident made him reflect deeply on how faith works differently for every person.

The audience was surprised by his frank admission.

The openness of Rajamouli left the audience at Varanasi in a state of shock. Many admired that this level of honesty came from a filmmaker of his stature without any diffidence. Rajamouli said though he doesn’t believe in God conventionally, he respects the power of stories, symbols, and cultural emotions attached to Gods like Hanuman.

He elaborated on his relationship with belief, saying it is complicated but honest; he does not follow rituals, but he cannot deny the pull of faith during times of adversity.

A Relevant Conversation for Many

Social media went abuzz over Rajamouli’s comments, with many viewers saying they could relate to the feeling of turning to faith only when life becomes overwhelming. Others admired his courage to talk about doubt and disappointment openly.
Rajamouli concluded by saying that such moments make him realise why mythological stories and their characters would continue to inspire millions of people. He, however, still doesn’t consider himself a believer, but he said the experience taught him something about human nature and the need for hope.
