When the Diwali travel season is at its peak, Air India travelers from Milan to Delhi suffered a setback when one of their flights was canceled after a technical glitch left hundreds stuck at Milan’s Malpensa Airport overnight. The disruption left passengers in chaos and dismay, with many set to return home to celebrate the festival with loved ones.
Unexpected Cancellation Sparks Anger
Flight AI-138, scheduled to depart from Milan late Friday evening, was grounded at the last moment after engineers detected a technical fault during pre-departure checks. While safety concerns prompted the airline to cancel the flight, passengers complained that they were not informed in advance and were left without clear guidance or arrangements for hours.
Videos from the terminal indicated dozens of passengers sitting on the floor with bags around them, angry over the absence of updates. “We kept waiting, but nobody turned up to assist. It’s Diwali, and we have no idea when we’ll return home,” said one passenger, who had waited for more than eight hours.

Air India Responds, Offers Accommodation and Rebooking
In a formal release, Air India assured that the cancellation was on account of a “technical issue that needed to be addressed urgently” and asserted that the safety of the passengers was its utmost concern. The airline further stated that the affected passengers were being accommodated in hotels, offered meals, and alternative means of traveling to Delhi and other connecting points.
“We do sincerely apologize for the disruption to our precious guests. Our ground staff in Milan are helping all passengers and rebooking them on the first available flights,” the spokesperson stated.

Diwali Travel Chaos Deepens
The timing of the cancellation contributed to the Diwali holiday travel rush, as airports throughout Europe and India are already facing overbooked flights and delays. Several passengers reported that they were worried they would lose out on family gatherings and celebrations because of the disruption.
Aviation analysts pointed out that such events were not rare in the festive season when air traffic was high and operational pressure was mounting.

Air India Faces Passenger Backlash
This event comes in the wake of increasing criticism regarding Air India’s operational difficulties and communication lapses. Social media websites were filled with tweets from irked passengers demanding better updates and faster compensation.
Stranded travelers in Milan for the time being still waited for the confirmation of new flight timings, hoping to reach Delhi on time to fight Diyas and meet their dear ones for Diwali.
