What Are ‘Green Crackers’ Delhi Govt Seeks Supreme Court Clearance for Before Diwali?

Green Crackers

As Diwali is just around the corner, the Delhi government has gone to the Supreme Court seeking clearance to permit the sale and use of “green crackers” in the national capital. The step is taken to balance the age-old celebration of the festival with the requirement to curb air pollution which goes through the roof during the festive period.

Understanding Green Crackers

Green crackers are crackers that are made to generate less smoke and fewer harmful emissions than traditional crackers. They are made to minimize particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) in the air, which are the main culprits behind Delhi-NCR’s deteriorating air quality during Diwali.

These crackers typically use eco-friendly chemicals that limit the release of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and heavy metals. While they still produce noise, the sound levels are usually capped, making them relatively safer for both humans and animals.

Delhi Government’s Proposal

The government of Delhi has requested the Supreme Court to allow green crackers for sale and bursting on the grounds that they enable citizens to celebrate traditions without harming public health excessively. The authorities contend that the move will pave the way for the utilization of eco-friendly alternatives and discourage the traditional, more environmentally unfriendly firecrackers.

Governments have also pointed out that appropriate regulation and monitoring will be implemented, with certified green crackers only being sold in markets.

Environmental and Health Benefits

It is felt by experts that although green crackers are not emission-free, their contribution to air pollution is much less. Lower smoke and dust emissions can prevent respiratory diseases, eye irritation, and cardiovascular diseases, especially for sensitive groups like children, the elderly, and those with underlying conditions.

Green crackers are viewed with hope by environmentalists as a move in the right direction, encouraging celebratory responsibility and educating people about the importance of sustainable festive practices.

Controversies and Challenges

Green crackers, though advantageous, remain not entirely safe, some critics say, and people should be encouraged to celebrate noise- and smoke-free Diwali instead. Enforcement is also a problem, as illegitimate or non-certified crackers might find their way into markets.

Looking Ahead

The Delhi government’s appeal is likely to be heard by the Supreme Court in the next few days. If approved, people might be given permission to buy and burst the green crackers subject to regulations, an attempt at celebrating tradition without compromising health and the environment.
