Darjeeling Landslide Kills 20; Flood Alert in Bengal Following Bhutan Dam Overflow

Darjeeling Landslide Kills 20

At least 20 people have died in a huge landslide in Darjeeling, with a number of others still missing as rescue efforts continue. The incident occurred during intense rains in the area, which has also caused a flood alert to be issued in West Bengal following an overflow of a dam in Bhutan that fed into local rivers.

Landslide Destroys Darjeeling

The landslide took place at Rangli Rangliot in Darjeeling, where multiple houses and roads were destroyed. Eyewitnesses said the situation was “chaotic,” with debris and mud covering homes and cars. Local officials confirmed that 20 bodies have so far been recovered, with teams laboring to reach trapped residents.

Rescue efforts are being coordinated by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the fire department, and local police with assistance from volunteers. Heavy machinery and medical teams have been deployed to clear debris and help survivors.

Flood Alert in West Bengal

Authorities have also put out a flood alert in some districts of North Bengal after reports that a dam in the Kurichhu River basin of Bhutan burst following continuous rains. Officials have asked people living on the Teesta and Jaldhaka river banks to remain vigilant and prepare for evacuation if needed.

Temporary camps have been established in susceptible regions, and emergency teams are carrying out door-to-door checks to guarantee safety.

Impact on Transportation and Everyday Life

The flood and landslide advisories have caused disruption to transportation in the area. Road connectivity to neighboring towns has been disrupted, and train services are running behind schedule due to landslide damage to the tracks. Schools and offices in Darjeeling and the surrounding areas have been shut temporarily as a precaution.

Citizens have been asked to stay away from unnecessary travel and obey instructions from local authorities.

Government Response

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the loss of lives and assured that all available resources are being put into motion to help victims and ensure no more casualties. She also called on people to work with rescue operations and remain informed about official advisories.

Ongoing Threat

With rainfall likely to continue for the next 24–48 hours, there are warnings of additional landslides and flooding, particularly in the hills. Citizens are being requested to be on the lookout, with emergency services at high alert in Darjeeling as well as neighbouring districts.
