India-Pakistan tensions have risen once more, with Islamabad sending what it described as a “mutual and measured response” to India’s latest statement regarding “erasing Pakistan from the map”. The exchange was made amid fresh diplomatic tension and fiery comments from both countries after a spate of cross-border skirmishes.
India’s Stern Warning Fuels Diplomatic Tension
Senior Indian leaders earlier this week told a New Delhi defense summit that “any provocation from the other side of the border will be responded to with a power sufficient enough to erase Pakistan from the map.” While the language has been characterized as “strategic” in purpose, it has elicited scathing reactions in Islamabad and around the region.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office summoned the Indian ambassador, terming the statement “irresponsible, inflammatory, and inimical to regional peace.” Officials further stated that such a statement may “further destabilize South Asia”, already reeling under shaky diplomatic relations.
Pakistan’s ‘Mutual’ Retort
Announcing in a press conference, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister stated that Pakistan would retaliate “with each aggression with mutual power.” Refraining from mentioning India by name, he stated,
“We do not seek conflict, but any attempt to undermine our sovereignty will be met equally. Mutual respect is the only way forward.”
Analysts interpret the use of the word “mutual” as a diplomatic attempt to tone down the confrontation, while still asserting Pakistan’s defensive stance.
Global Concerns Rise
The rising words have attracted global attention, with the United Nations calling on both countries to exercise restraint. A UN Secretary-General spokesperson reiterated that “dialogue, not provocation,” will help keep the region stable.
Washington and London have also made statements, calling on both nations to “de-escalate tensions and pursue cooperation.”
What Lies Ahead
They think that India and Pakistan are now trying to appeal to domestic constituencies, making strong statements to demonstrate political bravado. But security observers caution that these kinds of statements—particularly when magnified on the internet—would only raise mistrust and risk miscalculation.
For the moment, New Delhi has also kept its comments at bay, while Islamabad maintains it is “prepared but not provoking.” The next few days will tell us if the exchange is still a war of words—or something more drastic.
