Following the Karur stampede tragedy in which several people lost their lives during actor Vijay’s rally, the Madras High Court has directed a firm stance: no public or political rallies on highways until further notice. This follows as the authorities continue to come under mounting criticism over lax crowd control and paucity of safety measures.
Court Steps In After Tragedy
The Karur stampede-like tragedy, which killed 31 people and injured some others, has outraged Tamil Nadu. Acting on the petitions filed in the wake of the tragedy, the Madras High Court was harsh in its criticism, saying public safety cannot be overlooked for political display of strength.
The court underlined the fact that highways are lifelines for daily commuters and emergency services, and their blockage for rallies can be a serious threat to the public and participants alike.
Ban to Stay in Force Till Further Orders
The court’s interim order prohibits political rallies, processions, and mass gatherings on highways. District administrations have been ordered to implement the order in letter and spirit and make sure the organizers assume responsibility for crowd control in future events.
Judges have mentioned that although the right to assembly is constitutional, it would not transcend the right to life and security of citizens.
Political and Public Responses
The order has evoked caustic political reaction. Opposition leaders criticized the ruling administration for negligence in the management of the Karur rally and called for accountability. Legal experts, on the other hand, have appreciated the intervention by the court, hailing it as a much-needed move to promote public safety at mass gatherings.
On the ground, public opinion remains one of anger and fear. Victims’ families still call for justice, while common citizens breathe a sigh of relief that such rallies will no longer clog highways—at least for now.
The Road Ahead
The Madras High Court has also asked for a detailed report from the state government on the Karur tragedy, such as security failures, crowd management failure, and if permissions were granted correctly. Compensation and rehabilitation for victims’ families are under active consideration.
Until further notice, Tamil Nadu’s highways will continue to be out of bounds for rallies, a major change in the way mass gatherings are being governed in the state.
