Under-Construction Building Collapses in Chennai, Dozens Feared Dead

Chennai News

A huge tragedy befell Chennai yesterday when an under-construction multi-storey building collapsed, killing at least nine people and injuring scores of others. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with the authorities issuing a warning that more people may have died as scores of workers are said to be trapped under the rubble.

Collapse During Construction Activity

As per early reports, the accident took place in Washermanpet locality, where a huge residential building was under construction. Witnesses indicate that the building collapsed with a major thud all of a sudden, and this caused panic among residents in the area. Locals and passers-by were the first to initiate rescue efforts, trying to extract injured workers from the debris before emergency responders arrived.

Rescue Operations in Full Swing

Personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire brigade, and police have been sent to the site. Heavy equipment such as cranes and excavators are being employed to remove the debris, and medic teams are present nearby to offer quick assistance. Authorities have confirmed that at least a dozen labourers were inside the building when it collapsed.

Witness Accounts

Locals in the area recounted the collapse as a ghastly scene. “We were awakened by a deafening sound and when we went outside, the building was already in a pile of rubble. There was dust all over the place and people were crying out for help,” one local store owner reported. Another witness alleged that precautions at the site were “practically non-existent,” with labourers working without basic helmets or equipment.

Probe Ordered into the Incident

The Tamil Nadu government has directed a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse. The CMDA officials will probe if the construction was in accordance with the approved norms and if the builder had been negligent.

Experts have raised eyebrows since long regarding the uncontrolled construction activities in Chennai, citing the possibility that weak foundations, substandard materials, and the absence of checks and balances most often lead to such catastrophes.

Government’s Action and Compensation

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has mourned the tragedy and promised stern action against the culprits. Financial compensation to the victims and their families is also expected to be announced by the government.

Growing Worries About Building Safety

This tragedy underscores the need for more stringent enforcement of safety protocols in construction work in rapidly developing cities such as Chennai. As rescue work goes on, the city again finds itself questioning accountability, regulation, and workers’ safety.
