Delhi-NCR Braces for Torrential Rains: Traffic Gridlock and Waterlogging Engulf Region

Heavy Rain 2

A surprise rain on Wednesday brought life to a grinding halt in Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) cities of Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. The rains in the early morning, while bringing relief from the sizzling heat, caused heavy traffic jams and large-scale waterlogging on highways and flyovers. Passengers suffered huge delays when many vehicles stalled on water-logged roads.

Most Important Routes Severely Disrupted

Severe arterial roads, like the Delhi-Gurugram expressway, Ring Road, and zones around ITO, Minto Bridge, and AIIMS, witnessed major waterlogging. Footage from across the city depicted vehicles stuck in knee-deep water, with traffic crawling at a snail’s pace amidst peak office hours. Sector 18 in Noida and Cyber City zone in Gurugram were especially devastated, with office workers having to trek through waterlogged streets.

Flight Operations Normal, But Advisory Issued

Despite the situation on the ground, flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport remained largely unaffected. However, airlines such as Akasa Air and Vistara issued advisories to passengers, warning them to factor in additional travel time to the airport due to potential road delays.

Authorities Respond with Emergency Measures

Municipal and traffic officials also implemented pumps and emergency crews swiftly to drain water from the flooded sections. Interestingly, the Minto Bridge, which is often notorious for flooding, was not affected this time due to regular cleaning of stormwater drains. The police made use of social media sites to inform the public regarding alternative routes and congested areas.

Rain Expected Again, People Asked to Remain Vigilant

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced a yellow alert for sustained rain in Delhi and surrounding areas in the next 48 hours. Expect moderate to heavy rain along with thunderstorms, particularly in the morning and evening. Citizens have been asked to remain indoors as much as possible and track updates from weather and traffic departments in real-time.

Drainage and Infrastructure Issues Surface Again

As the city teetered on the brink of being inundated, the episode again brought questions about Delhi-NCR’s drainage capacity and city planning into focus. While the officials moved swiftly, long-term measures are still required to avert such pandemonium with each monsoon episode.
