During the latest debate regarding work culture within Bollywood, acclaimed director Anurag Basu came to actress Deepika Padukone’s defense regarding curtailing daily shoot timing to eight hours. This debate was initiated when Padukone apparently walked out of director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit, reportedly due to differences over long working hours.
“I Stand By What She Said,” says Basu.
Basu, who is known for being a collaborative and actor-friendly director, stated that he is in total agreement with Padukone’s perspective. According to him, providing a safe working environment for actors is not just beneficial for their work but for the overall well-being of the production as well. Talking about shorter, more humane working hours, Basu said, “I’ve never had my actors complaining about late shifts—because I don’t allow them in the first place.”
His remarks happen to coincide with the time when some industry people have begun accepting the cost of long shooting schedules, particularly for women juggling work and personal obligations.
Deepika’s Exit from Spirit Sparks Industry Debate
Recently, mom Deepika Padukone apparently demanded fixed 8-hour day shoots while working on Spirit. When her demand was not met, she walked out of the project. Actress Tripti Tripti
Dimri has since filled in the role originally requested by Padukone.
Although Sandeep Reddy Vanga refused to comment on the exact reasons behind the change in casting, sources feel that the problem lay in Deepika’s need for a balanced work-cum-life schedule.
An Extended Call for a Healthier Set Culture?
Padukone’s move and Basu’s endorsement have sparked renewed debate over working conditions in the Indian film sector. Other actors, such as Kajol, Vikrant Massey, and Ajay Devgn, have too joined the ranks of those seeking to restrict excessively long working hours on the set.
Most think the present discussion could drive policy-level changes in the film sector, like union-mandated shift limits or more actor-friendly schedules.
With industry leaders such as Anurag Basu supporting a move towards equitable working conditions, Deepika Padukone’s appeal for eight-hour shoots seems to have rung true. As debates about mental well-being, safety, and professionalism continue to swell in Bollywood, the industry might be on the cusp of a true cultural transformation.
