Indian cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s highly anticipated return to international cricket may be delayed longer than anticipated. Their return, which was first anticipated in the upcoming series of white-ball cricket against Bangladesh in August, is now in doubt as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) holds off on making the tour official until receiving formal clearance from the Indian government.
Bangladesh Series on Hold Despite Fixture Planning
Even as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has already released a provisional schedule for a six-match limited-overs series — three ODIs and three T20Is — Indian cricket officials have yet to make it official. The games were slated to be played between August 17 and August 31 in Dhaka and Chattogram.
But a top BCB official disclosed that the Indian board had quoted that there must be government clearance prior to making a commitment. Up until now, the series has not been confirmed, and any delays in approval may send the whole tour later or trigger changes to the schedule.
Delay Affects Star Players’ Return
The Bangladesh tour was being considered a possible platform for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to make their comeback to India’s white-ball team following an exile from T20Is and Tests. As both players were absent from recent series and the process of transitioning to new, young players was in full flow, fans were waiting with bated breath to see the duo play once again.
If the tour fails to get clearance in time, Kohli and Rohit’s next opportunity to don the India jersey could only be in the home ODI series against Australia this year.
BCCI Keeping Options Open
For the time being, the BCCI has not made any official announcement regarding the tour status, but sources state that talks with the government are in progress. The board is said to still be optimistic about solving the issue in time but is also drawing up a contingency plan in case of delays.
While things are in the works, the ultimate call on India’s tour of Bangladesh — and thus the return of Kohli and Rohit — depends on diplomatic and administrative approval. In the meantime, both players and supporters will have to wait with bated breath for an indication of when India’s senior professionals will next face a cricket ball.
