Following weeks of blazing heat, city dwellers in Delhi-NCR welcomed the change in weather when light showers lashed several areas of the region. Despite some relief from the nagging heat, the official onset of the southwest monsoon is yet to be announced.
Scattered Rainfall Provides Transitory Relief
Light rain was seen on Saturday in various pockets of the city, such as South Delhi, Dwarka, and outer zones. Some parts of Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad also witnessed short periods of showers. The rain, though not extensive, caused a significant temperature dip and better air quality and proved to be a respite for most.
IMD Keeps a Watch, Issues Yellow Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) declared a “Yellow Alert” for the city and its suburbs, forecasting light to moderate rains over the next 24 to 48 hours. Thunderstorms and windy conditions have also been predicted alongside this change in weather. The alert is more of a precaution, asking citizens to remain aware of the sudden change in weather as well as impending traffic congestion.
Even with the showers, the IMD has made it clear that the monsoon has yet to reach Delhi officially. The monsoon line still remains south of the capital, and meteorologists indicate more prolonged and widespread rain needs to be witnessed before one can make the announcement.
Temperatures Fall, Air Quality Enhances
After the rains, the temperatures in Delhi-NCR fell by a few degrees. In central Delhi, the high temperature was around 36°C—well below the 42°C highs just a few days ago. In southern localities, the effect was even more pronounced, with areas recording as much as a 10-degree fall.
Air quality also showed signs of improvement, with AQI levels falling into the “satisfactory” range in many parts of the city. Winds accompanying the rain helped disperse pollutants that had been trapped due to prolonged dry conditions.
What’s Next?
Meteorologists predict sporadic showers to persist throughout the weekend and well into next week. Nevertheless, the actual monsoon burst still has a few days to go. The authorities are keeping an eye on the situation and urging people to remain updated through weather reports and warnings. Although still short of the full monsoon onset, the short spell of rain in Delhi-NCR has given much relief from the heat. As the IMD has issued a yellow alert, citizens can expect lighter rain and cooler days in the days to come.
