A night meant to be filled with joy turned into tragedy in Bengaluru as 11 individuals were killed in a stampede amidst the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations. After the team’s highly anticipated victory in a key IPL match, supporters congregated in large numbers close to the MG Road zone to participate in a public function arranged to commemorate the victory. But what started as a celebratory event quickly turned out of hand with overcrowding, poor crowd control, and no basic safety measures.
What Went Wrong
Witnesses report that the crowd built up to a point where it became uncontrollable in the evening hours. Some fans scaled barricades and buildings to see the players or join in the celebrations. Local police, although present, were said to have been overwhelmed by the sudden increase in the number of people. Panic evolved as some individuals pushed forward, creating a human crush. The low exit points caused it to be hard for individuals to freely move, thus creating confusion.
Confirmations by police sources indicate that among the dead were two women and three minors. At least 30 others were injured, with a number of them rushed to surrounding hospitals, some in critical condition.
Government and Police Response
The state government of Karnataka has directed a high-level investigation into the incident. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condoned the loss and promised compensation of ₹5 lakh to each of the bereaved families. He also assured that action against the culprits would be tough. Bengaluru City Police Commissioner also indicated that permission for the function had been given strictly with certain conditions, which were perhaps not implemented to the core.
RCB Releases Statement
The RCB franchise released a sympathetic statement conveying profound regret for the senseless loss of lives. “Our prayers and thoughts are with the bereaved families of this terrible tragedy. “Celebrations should never end in death, and we stand willing to cooperate with authorities to help those affected,” read the statement.
Call for Improved Event Planning
The tragedy has again brought to the fore the need for thorough planning and crowd management in public gatherings. People and activists are now calling for accountability on the part of event planners and city authorities to prevent such a catastrophe from occurring again.
