Sri Lankan lawmakers will elect the countrys new President today

1. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar says India provided 3.8 billion dollar assistance for ameliorating serious economic situation in Sri Lanka.

2. Seven persons from Sri Lanka were rescued off the coast of Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram by the Indian Coast Guard and handed over to the police on Tuesday.

1. International Monetary Fund warned that a Russian gas embargo would lead to severe recessions in eastern Europe and Italy if countries around the world hoarded their own scarce supplies.

2. Former UK Finance Minister Rishi Sunak won the latest round in the contest to replace British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. With lawmaker Kemi Badenoch eliminated from the contest, it is now down to three contenders.

3. Heatwave Alert: Britain recorded hottest day ever with temperatures hitting 40.2 degrees Celsius.

4. Albania and North Macedonia on Tuesday began talks with the European Union for membership. The EU’s Executive Commission in 2018 had recommended membership negotiations start, but Germany, the Netherlands, France and finally Bulgaria held up the process with different demands. Albania and North Macedonia, which are NATO members, have received criticism for taking in migrants from outside the bloc.

5. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Tehran on Tuesday where he will hold talks with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

6. Sri Lankan lawmakers will elect the country’s new President today (July 20). The candidates are Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sinhala Buddhist nationalist Dullas Alahapperuma and leftist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

7. Scientists have said part of James Webb Space Telescope, the world’s most powerful telescope, suffered permanent damage due to a series of micrometeorite strikes.

The micrometeoroid which hit a segment in the period May 22-24 caused significant uncorrectable change in the overall figure of that segment, said scientists. The telescope was built at a cost of $10 billion.
