1. The 86th meeting of the India-Bangladesh Joint River Commission began in Kolkata yesterday. The problem of rivers flowing between India and Bangladesh are the major issue of discussion.

The Ganga Water Treaty, signed in 1996, will expire in 2026.

2. PM Modi has been conferred with the prestigious Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados Award in recognition of his strategic leadership and valuable assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic. The award was received by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita on behalf of Prime Minister Modi in a ceremony held in Bridgetown, Barbados.

3. In Nepal, a fire that broke out at Sansarkot Hill of the Palpa district of Lumbini Province is yet to be doused. The fire could not be controlled due to excessive fog and continuous storms. The fire has caused damage to four community forests spread over 170 hectares.

4. In U.S., a 27-year-old student from Telangana was shot dead by unidentified persons in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Praveen, a native of Keshampet Mandal in Shadnagar Constituency, Rangareddy district, was in his second year of a Master’s program while working a part-time job. The tragic incident has left his family and community deeply shocked.

5. During External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to the UK, a significant security breach occurred outside Chatham House in London, where he was participating in a discussion. The incident involved a group of pro-Khalistani terrorists who staged a demonstration, chanting slogans and waving flags.

6. PM Modi recently expressed his encouragement and appreciation for Japan’s commitment to the ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ initiative. This came after a meeting with a Japanese business delegation led by Tatsuo Yasunaga, where discussions focused on deepening economic collaboration between India and Japan.

1. United Nations (UN) will slash monthly food aid for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh from $12.50 to $6 per month from April due to a funding crisis, the World Food Programme (WFP) informed Bangladesh.

2. In Bangladesh, Students blocked the railway line in Rajshahi on Wednesday, demanding an end to Dhaka University- and Dhaka-centric dominance in power and appointments across all sectors and calling for decentralisation.

3. US President Donald Trump issued a stern ultimatum to Hamas, demanding the immediate release of all hostages held in Gaza, along with the return of the bodies of those killed.

4. The Maldives has witnessed a sharp drop in exports in January 2025, with the total value falling by 29 million Maldivian Rufiya compared to the same month last year. Goods worth 144 million Rufiya were exported, down from 173 million in January last year.

5. The Golden Dome missile defence shield is a recent initiative by the US government aimed at enhancing national security. Announced by President Donald Trump, this programme seeks to protect the United States from a variety of aerial threats.

6. The Cairo Declaration emerged from an Emergency Summit of the Arab League held on 4 March 2025. This summit adopted a $53-billion plan for Gaza’s reconstruction, marking collective Arab response to the humanitarian crisis following the Israel-Hamas conflict.
